I graduated from Georgia Tech in Aerospace Engineering with the highest honor. I have been tutoring math for the past four years, and accomplished over 600 hours of math tutoring at the college level. I can tutor students from the elementary school level up to college level. I was also a certified math tutor at ASC (Academic Success Center) at Georgia Southern University and was awarded as the best tutor of the year for the 2010-2011 school year. I try to be friend with my students before I become their tutors because that way they can feel more comfortable to share their concerns with me. As a result, I can figure out the part the student is struggling with faster and start focusing on that. My strength in teaching is to simplify problems rather than just start solving them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 2 is one of the most important topics in mathematics. In all aspects of math in different levels algebra is one of the requirements. The best way to tutor this subject is to teach the methods and rules and constantly use them. Once it is passed that level, then working out more involved problems could be used as to build confidence for the student.
I have seen many students who complain about " I don't see it". They are right and this is the key to succeed in algebra, being able to see how to use what we know to solve the problem and set up the equation. I would go over the basic rules of algebra first and make sure that my student feels confident and understands the rules. Then, solving problems starting from easy to more involved questions. Through out this process I teach them the tricks that might show up and watch out for them. I have applied this method before and got very satisfactory feedback from my students.
