About Michele

Hello! My name is Michele. I am a PhD student in astronomy. I have a masters in physics obtained locally, and before that, I graduated from Cornell University with a bachelors in physics. I took a fair bit of chemistry in high school and college before deciding to switch to physics, so I have a decent chemistry background. All of this science requires math! I have taken a lot of calculus, and I have a very strong base in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

For 4 years I worked as a teaching assistant (TA) in introductory astronomy labs as part of my PhD program. My work as a TA has introduced me to all sorts of people with different ways of thinking from high school students to older students returning for continuing education. During undergrad, I also took a course called "Teaching and Learning Physics" to improve myself and become a better teacher, in hopes of some day becoming a professor. This class discussed the difference between learning and simply memorizing or cramming for a test. It was a very eye-opening class that discussed several teaching methods and a lot of common mistakes and oversights made by teachers today that lead to poor learning, despite students' efforts.

I am a very patient individual, who will sit down with a student and step by step go through any difficulties the student might be having. Through Wyzant, I hope to give my students a better learning experience than the poor teachers discussed in my teaching course.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I could do algebra in my sleep! I'll be sure to try and break things down and cater to your needs and way of thinking.

Algebra 2

I could do algebra in my sleep! I'll be sure to try and break things down and cater to your needs and way of thinking.

Astronomy

I am currently obtaining my PhD in astronomy. My research focus is mainly on nearby stars and star and planet formation, but I am well versed in many aspects of astronomy.

Calculus

I have taken Calculus I, II, III (multivariable), and IV (differential equations). I've also taken linear algebra and two complex analysis classes. My physics classes made a lot of use of calculus, so I have had to retain my knowledge!

Chemistry

I took honors and AP chemistry classes in high school, and 2 intro chemistry classes in college which included weekly 3-hour labs. A large portion of advanced chemistry topics are covered in physics, so other than organic chemistry, I'm pretty confident in this subject.

Elementary Math

I have experience with the basics all the way through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. I am careful to assess a student's learning style and discuss the material in a way they understand best. My 4 years as a teaching assistant has been the most valuable to me in developing my skill of working with different students with different ways of thinking.

General Computer

I am a millennial! We breathe computers, it seems. Aside from that, as an astronomy PhD student I use a computer on a daily basis. I also have a mom who finds computers very confusing, and I am very patient! She claims I am better at explaining things to her than my dad is, so take that as you will. I have experience with Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Geometry

A strong knowledge of geometry is required for my field. I'll be sure to try and break things down and discuss them in a way that works for you!

GRE

In Fall 2011, my GRE scores were 90th, 87th, and 87th percentiles in Verbal Reasoning, Qualitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.

Martial Arts

I have been doing martial arts on and off for the past 8 years. I have experience in a multitude of styles listed below. From all of this, I can definitely show you some of how to punch, kick, block, dodge a strike, get out of a choke, what to do if someone tackles you to the ground, how to fall, etc. The reason I don't have a black belt yet is that I have moved from town to town before I could stay in one program long enough. Please message me with your specific interest, and we can talk about if my skills match up!

Taekwondo --- blue (6th) belt --- both ITF & WTF systems
Filipino Martial Arts --- orange (2nd) belt --- World Modern Arnis Association (WMAA)
Boxing --- moderate experience
Krav Maga --- elementary experience
Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) --- elementary experience
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu --- elementary experience
Jeet Kune Do --- elementary experience
Tai Chi --- beginner
Wing Chun Kung Fu --- beginner
Aikido --- super beginner
Wushu --- super beginner
Hapkido --- super beginner

Microsoft Excel

Through various school projects and research projects, and even for my search for which college I wanted to attend, I've had to use Microsoft Excel. It was first introduced to me in middle school so I've had a long time to figure it out :). We can work through things based on what you want to use excel for and of course at whatever pace works for you.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used Microsoft Powerpoint for various school and work presentations. I have also used it to generate large posters for conferences. It was first introduced to me in middle school so I've had a long time to figure it out :). We can work through things based on what you want to use excel for and of course at whatever pace works for you.

Physics

I currently hold a Bachelors and Masters in Physics. I feel especially confident in Classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, and Thermodynamics. We can of course also work through Electricity and Magnetism and Quantum Mechanics. I have taken upper level classes in both of these at Cornell University, and a graduate Quantum Mechanics class at Georgia State University.

Precalculus

I have taken Calculus I, II, III (multivariable), and IV (differential equations). I've also taken linear algebra and two complex analysis classes. My physics classes made a lot of use of calculus, so I have had to retain my knowledge!

SAT Math

My SAT Math Score in 2008 was 750/800 (~90th percentile).

Trigonometry

Fundamental to a lot of calculus, I've needed a strong background in trigonometry just to take some of the lower level physics classes for my bachelor's degree.
