There are no words in the dictionary than can express how impressed and pleased I am with Sandra's services. Ms. Sandy, as my son calls her, challenges and motivates my son. My son was diagnosed with dyslexia and as a result hated reading. Since we began working with Ms. Sandy not only has his reading abilities increased but so has his self-esteem. We have worked with a few reading tutors in the past, but I feel we have finally hit the "jackpot"!
Sandra is by far the best tutor we have ever worked with. After watching her interact with our son it became apparent to us that she was a true educator.
Our son, who is 14 years old, is a very good student, but he lacked the organization and structure he needed to become an exceptional student. Sandra motivated him and showed him how organization would same him time, minimize mistakes and improve his performance in school.
Our son looks forward to his Tuesday and Thursday sessions with Sandra and has become an organized, well structured, and an exceptional student. Sandra earns 5 stars from us.
Sandra has done such a wonderful job working with my adoptive daughter. My daughter is sixteen years old and has a significant developmental delay as well as very challenging behaviors that make it difficult for her to focus and engage in learning. Sandra genuinely understands how to work with my daughter and addresses her behavioral challenges while getting her to engage in her own learning without missing a beat. Each session I see Sandra on-time, prepared with lesson plan and materials in hand, addressing and building on each reading gap in my daughter's learning to give her a strong foundation for literacy, as well as seeking to engage us as parents in her learning more frequently during the week. After a few weeks, we could already see more confidence in my daughter as she read and many of her learning gaps beginning to fill-in! Sandra even called me one week to discuss possible incentives she had been thinking of to inspire my daughter to work hard and reach set reading goals and has spent time with me on the phone seeking to better understand my daughter and her specific needs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham method through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education.
In addition to being Orton-Gillingham trained through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education, I have also studied language development, beginning reading, teaching elementary school math, learning styles, and special needs. I have over 20 years' experience teaching and tutoring. I have taught elementary age students in the classroom and also in private lessons. My experiences have developed in me a proficiency for breaking down concepts in a way that is easy to understand for the individual learner. Success in all subjects for an elementary student always hinges on his or her ability to read, learn basic math principles, and apply appropriate study skills. By increasing skills in these areas, I have empowered numerous students to achieve success in all school subjects.
As part of my training for an education degree, I studied teaching elementary school math. I have over 20 years of tutoring and teaching experience and have helped a wide array of students in mathematics, from preschoolers learning basic concepts through high schoolers studying Algebra I or preparing for the SAT.
I am a certified language arts teacher with over 20 years of experience in education.
I am a certified English/language arts teacher, and as such, have a solid training in phonics. In order to enhance my teaching, I have acquired additional credits in multi-sensory reading by training on the highly acclaimed Orton-Gillingham method. Additionally, I have extensive experience in private tutoring of all ages, including emerging readers who are new to phonemic awareness and older readers who need to fill in gaps in the foundational principles of phonics in order to improve their reading and comprehension.
As a certified language arts teacher, public speaking and other stage arts were included in my training and are required as part of classroom teaching core standards. Additionally, I speak in front of audiences of various ages when I promote my children's book, Joey is Thankful. I have been filmed by CNN's Accent Health, WebMD, the Arthritis Foundation, and also by the American College of Rheumatology to share my personal journey of health and well being.
As a certified English-language arts teacher, I have experience in teaching all levels of reading, from pre-reading skills through adult learners. As an Orton-Gillingham trained reading instructor, I build a strong foundation in phonemic awareness through multi-sensory activities which maximize retention and keep the student engaged and excited about learning. I provide an initial assessment and periodic updates on the student's progress. These assessments are included in my hourly rate.
I have assisted numerous students in preparing for the SSAT. As a former Associate Director of a prestigious local tutoring company which was one of the first to offer SSAT tutoring in metro Atlanta, I also arranged, observed, and evaluated group classes and our other tutors.
