Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I taught myself to use Adobe Illustrator version 3 way back in the early 1990s and have used it on both full-time jobs and freelance/temp work ever since. Currently I am using Illustrator daily via Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription service as a freelance graphic designer; prior to this I have used AI to generate logo designs, special type effects and even entire pieces such as bottle labels for printing. I am experienced in the use of basic shapes, Bezier curves, patterns and borders, masking effects and transformations of grouped and single objects. I can also demonstrate how to add type to a curve, create and export paths, apply various filters for visual effects such as arcs and waves, create and edit 3-D objects, and create layered documents grouping sets of elements on separate layers. I can also export Illustrator files to a variety of formats including SVG, EPS, PDF, TIFF and JPEG.

Adobe InDesign

I have used InDesign since its earliest versions to produce business cards, letterheads, newsletters and more. Currently I am using the new Creative Cloud version on my own machines. I served as the resident InDesign guru to other prepress designers at my last employer. I have converted content in InDesign for use in QuarkXPress and vice versa, both by hand and using third-party conversion software. I am also expert at importing Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other external material into InDesign.

Adobe Photoshop

I first started working with Photoshop at a photography studio in Rockville, MD in 1996. I used Creative Suite versions 3, 4 and 5 in jobs as a prepress technician for local printing firms in Atlanta, GA from 2005-11 and through Aquent LLC for The Home Depot's corporate website in 2007. I've created images for my current professional website and online portfolio using Photoshop CS5 at home. I am now working full-time with Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC) as a freelancer.

Desktop Publishing

I trained in desktop publishing at USDA Graduate School in Washington, DC in 1989. I have spent over two decades since using PageMaker, QuarkXPress and InDesign (and even Microsoft Word!) to design and produce everything from newsletters to entire books. I first worked full-time in the DC area for two employers, one a non-governmental organization and the other a biotech research firm. Later, I worked for a combined 5.5 years performing prepress DTP and digital printing of documents at two Atlanta printing firms. Most recently, I worked at another local printing shop creating brochures and other documents full-time.

I have experience using QuarkXPress and InDesign files linked to EFI Fiery RIP-equipped Konica Minolta and Xerox printer/copier systems. I have worked on Creative Suite 3, 4 and 5 to produce and update DTP layouts. I am currently using Adobe's Creative Suite 5 at work and the new Creative Cloud version CS6 at home.

Drawing

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from Louisiana State University, whose curriculum emphasized life drawing as well as hand illustration of comps and samples. I have also created hand illustrations for T-shirts, tape and CD covers and program book covers for a number of science-fiction conventions including Conterpoint in DC, Crescent City Con and Nolacon II/Worldcon in New Orleans.

I can offer tutoring in drawing head and body shots, landscapes with perspective and foreshortening, image composition, shadows and atmospheric effects, and the various properties of different media such as charcoal and lead pencils, colored pencils and ink pens on a variety of paper stocks.

English

I have always had exceptional skill in using English, having been an active reader since the age of two (or so my late mother claimed). After I also graduated with honors in English from Nimitz High School in Irving, TX, I achieved scores in the upper two percent of all students nationwide on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams in English reading and comprehension. These scores earned me advanced placement in English courses at Louisiana State University.

I have since applied my English skills to creative writing of both essays and short fiction, copywriting and editing (most recently at Superior Printing of Atlanta, GA) and speaking in groups.

General Computer

My first direct exposure to computers was in high school junior year, when I was trained to use a computerized typesetting system (Linotype CRTronic, Nimitz High School, Irving, TX). I have since had training in similar systems directly from Linotronic in Dallas, TX in 1986 and have taught myself to use Windows and Macintosh computers since then, with help from training provided by Manpower Inc. and MacSpecialists.

Although I am not a programmer by trade, I do know some BASIC as well as HyperTalk and JavaScript. I have installed and maintained peripherals and networking equipment and software as de facto administrator of a small LAN for The Alden Group in New York, NY. I regularly read magazines including WIRED, PC WORLD and MACWORLD to keep abreast of technological and industry developments, and websites such as Gizmodo, The Inquirer and CNet. I also own a Mac mini and a Sony Vaio Windows laptop which I use daily. I am an early adopter of new software and test out various new applications and updates frequently.

Grammar

I completed a full year of honors English at Nimitz High in Irving, TX and scored in the upper 2 percent of students in the US at the time on the English segments of my SAT and ACT college entrance exams in 1981. This earned me advanced placement in English composition courses at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA that year. I have spent over two decades since proofreading documents in English for grammar, syntax and usage, most recently for 3.5 years at Superior Printing Co. of Atlanta, GA as a prepress operator. I am familiar with Strunk and White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE and the Associated Press and New York Times style books.

HTML

I first learned HTML on my own as a junior creative at a New York, NY advertising agency, The Alden Group, in 1996. I was tasked with revamping the agency's website and went on to design new websites for their clients including a maker of fitness equipment and a travel packager. I have taken courses in web design from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA in 2002 and in Dreamweaver MX from The Knowledge Shop in 2007. Today I still maintain and update my own personal website using hand-coded HTML and consult on coding for a local construction contractor. I have most recently received certification in HTML 4.0 from the National Computer Science Academy in October 2011. I am studying HTML 5 now to integrate its new features into my tutoring skill set.

Macintosh

I have used Apple Macintosh computers and software since 1988, and owned Macs since 1990. I am a member of the Atlanta Macintosh Users Group and have run Mac OS versions from 6 to OS X Snow Leopard. I have been a Macintosh operator at my last two jobs, as a prepress designer for Allegra Print & Imaging in Marietta and Superior Printing in Atlanta.

I am conversant with a wide range of Macintosh software and regularly read MACWORLD and other magazines to keep abreast of developments in the technology, as well as Mac-related websites. I have served as informal troubleshooter for Mac problems in my last two jobs as well. I have created my own professional website entirely using Mac software and hardware.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used Microsoft Powerpoint on both Macintosh and Windows platforms since 1990. I worked for two years as a temp designer at Ernst & Young LLP's Creative Services Group in New York, NY designing and adapting slide presentations for both onscreen display and print production, as well as importing/exporting both textual and graphic content between Powerpoint and other applications such as Microsoft Word/Excel and QuarkXPress. I also developed a slide presentation for the Philadelphia City Dept. of Public Health as a freelancer in 2002. I am experienced in using animations, transitions and formatting of copy and in editing graphic elements within the program.

Microsoft Publisher

I have spent the past several years using Microsoft Publisher to process and convert client layouts of documents including newsletters, flyers and brochures to PDF and other formats for commercial printing. I first learned to use it in 2003 at Allegra Print & Imaging in Marietta, GA, and later at Superior Printing Co. Inc. and Minuteman Press of Sandy Springs, both in the Atlanta, GA metro area. I have used versions as late as Office 2010 and can demonstrate how to add copy and format text, import and create images, create and edit master pages and export to a variety of other formats including PDF, TIFF, JPEG, Word and RTF.

Microsoft Windows

I have been trained in the use of Windows computers at Manpower Inc. in Washington, DC and have worked for two years as a temp designer at Ernst & Young LLP's Creative Services Group in New York, NY on Windows-based networks of computers. I have owned my own Windows laptops since 1998 and am familiar with versions from 3.1 to Windows 7 Professional. I worked for a combined 5.5 years on Windows-based EFI Fiery RIP systems at Allegra Print & Imaging in Marietta, GA and Superior Printing Co. in Atlanta, GA. I am experienced in installation and setup of Windows computers as well as disk optimization and maintenance, file organization and program installation and removal. I am currently using Windows 7 Pro full-time in a new job with another local printing shop.

Microsoft Word

I first received training in Microsoft Word on the Macintosh platform from Manpower Inc. in Washington, DC in 1989, and have used it on both Mac and Windows platforms ever since. I spent two years following that using it to lay out research papers and book compilations thereof for the Economic Development Institute of The World Bank. Most recently, I have used Word 2008 to process client documents at Superior Printing Co. of Atlanta, GA from 2008 to 2011, at Minuteman Press of Sandy Springs, GA from 2012 to 2013, and at home on my own. I have learned all formatting and layout features, can teach importation of content from other documents and programs, data charting and tables, mail merge operations and find/replace operations.

Proofreading

I have spent over two decades since graduating college proofreading documents in English for grammar, syntax and usage, most recently for 3.5 years at Superior Printing Co. of Atlanta, GA as a prepress operator. I am familiar with Strunk and White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE and the Associated Press and New York Times style books. I am conversant with all commonly used proofreading symbols and used them in my most recent job mentioned above.

Reading

I have been an avid reader nearly my whole life and consistently read above my grade level throughout grade school. I completed an honors English course at Nimitz High School in Irving, TX in 1981 and scored highly in reading comprehension on my SAT and ACT college entrance exam, achieving advanced placement in English composition courses at Louisiana State University in 1981-83.

Vocabulary

My personal vocabulary is estimated at 36,200 words by the TestYourVocab.com website's algorithmic test. I scored 690 in the verbal portion of my SAT college entrance exam in 1981 (in the upper 2 percent of US students tested at that time). I completed a full year of honors English at Nimitz High School in Irving, TX that same year and have spent over 30 years since then expanding my vocabulary.

Web Design

I created 3 client websites for The Alden Group, a New York, NY advertising agency, in 1996-98. These websites included extensive use of HTML, JavaScript and embedded animations and video/audio. Completed course in Web Design at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA, 2002. Adapted print materials for use on retail website of The Home Depot and created CSS pages for the Atlanta Board of Realtors, 2007. Completed course in DreamWeaver MX at The Knowledge Shop, Duluth, GA, 2007. I have built and maintain my own professional website with portfolio of previous work.

Writing

I have been writing at least since my late teens, including writing for the school newspapers of both high schools I attended, Northside High in Lafayette, LA and Nimitz High in Irving, TX (news articles and opinion columns) in 1979-81, and for the campus newspaper of my university, The Daily Reveille of Louisiana State University, 1981-85. I have sold writing professionally to Trek Publications of Houston, TX and have been published in the newsletters of the Companions of Doctor Who in New Orleans, LA and the Washington Science Fiction Association in Washington, DC. Currently I maintain a blog, Stumbling Toward the Light, on LiveJournal and write for Triond and Newsvine websites.
