About Colin

My name is Colin. I have a Masters and Bachelors in English Literature, with a special focus in 20th century literature. The years that I have spent reading and discussing literature have taught me that the purpose of prose and poetry is to excite and inspire the reader. Novels and poems need the patience and energy of every reader to be of any value. But everyone enjoys reading to different extents, and some people don’t enjoy reading at all. Though that is the case, it should not hinder your performance in school. I believe that we can all be insightful readers and articulate writers. Giving students the tools to analyze and contextualize works of literature in ways that are exciting to them is one of my passions. And I have found that, once students are engaged with the material, it is easy to facilitate the focusing of their ideas into a well-structured work. Therefore, my teaching method is based, in part, on the individual student and understanding their interests and needs.

I have two years of experience educating students at the college level working as both a writing tutor and teaching assistant. In both positions, I worked individually with students to improve the content and style of written assignments across different disciplines. Therefore, I am well versed in communicating the proper essay format to students in simple and clear language regardless of the subject. I also instructed students on the best practices for writing, research methods, and citation styles. I can confidently say that every student that I collaborated with saw improved scores on their written assignments. Furthermore, these skills will help you become an effective written communicator, and are impactful in a wide variety of classes and beneficial well beyond school.

I want to guide students of all levels to identify the elements of literary works that they are excited by and express themselves skillfully. I am easy to reach and will always provide prompt responses. Please contact me for any additional information or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I received my Master’s degree in English Literature from Fordham University with a 3.78 GPA. My Bachelor’s degree in English Literature was obtained at CUNY Hunter College where I graduated Cum Laude. While working towards my Master’s, I worked as both a writing tutor and teaching assistant, each for one year. I am qualified to instruct students in literary analysis, best writing practices, research methods, reading comprehension, and grammar.
