I have been an elementary school teacher for thirteen years, have been tutoring for ten years, and have worked with children with a wide variety of learning needs. I have taught reading, second, and third graders of many different ability levels and cultural backgrounds. I take time to get to know each student so that I can best identify their interests and unique needs. I insist on talking with parents beforehand, and usually contact the child's teacher to learn more about each child's particular areas of need. I have many resources to use as needed to most quickly and efficiently meet the needs of each child. I think that learning should be an enjoyable experience, but insist that those I tutor be serious and focused during each session. I typically inform parents beforehand about the specific learning goals and activities I plan to use for every session, and at the end report to parents the progress made, and areas of additional help they need before the next session. I fully realize the need for students to master the basic skills of reading, writing, and the basic math facts by the end of the third grade. My first introductory meeting is free of charge.

Patrick has done a wonderful job with identifying the needs of my daughter and providing her with a customized tutoring plan to meet her needs in Reading and Language Arts. Patrick is patient and truly wants my daughter to succeed in every capacity. The feedback that Patrick renders after each session is detailed and provides honest feedback on the challenges he faces and what my daughter can continue to work on when he is not around. I give Patrick "Two Thumbs" up. My husband and I appreciate his desire to teach beyond our expectations.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I attended a parochial school for grades K - 6 in which I received a rigorous religious education in Protestantism. In college I minored in religion, taking courses in world religions, the Gospels, Buddhism, modern philosophy and "Death of God" theology, and religious elements in modern literature. My thesis was on the work of Jesuit priest and paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin, who attempted to reconcile Christianity and Evolution. I was accepted into Yale Divinity School but instead served a mission for my church in Hiroshima, Japan. Studies included the essential unity of all religions and the influence of religion on culture and politics.

I have used Reader's Theatre with my elementary and middle school students on a regular basis.
