I am an experienced math tutor and teacher. Many of my students call me "Dr. Calculus" because of my deep passion and enthusiasm for calculus!

My tutoring focus is college calculus (single- and multi-variable) and ordinary differential equations. In addition to tutoring college students, I will tutor Dual Enrollment high school students who are taking a university calculus course. At present I am not tutoring students taking any precalculus-level courses (algebra/trigonometry/precalculus) nor high school students taking AP Calculus AB/BC.

I am currently a Lecturer of Mathematics at Kennesaw State University and teach Calculus I, II, and III (single- multi-variable calculus), and Ordinary Differential Equations.

Prior to teaching at KSU, I was a private high school math teacher, teaching all the math subjects up through calculus. I also taught, as a substitute teacher, AP Calculus at a prestigious private high school for a semester. (However, as I just noted, I do not presently tutor AP Calculus students.)

Here's a brief overview of my background and relevant experience:

After receiving a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering (which included extra courses in mathematics such as graduate-level numerical analysis and computer modeling), I worked for 14 years as an engineer and staff scientist at three DOE National Labs, primarily researching alternative energy conversion technologies. My research at the National Labs included extensive mathematical analysis and modeling, both analytical and numerical, of complex systems.

After moving to the Atlanta area ten years ago, my passion for mathematics led me to switch careers and become a full-time high school math teacher at a small, secular private school in Acworth, teaching all the math subjects in grades 6 to 12, including precalculus and calculus. I also began tutoring math, and have tutored over a thousand hours (with more than 400 for Wyzant). I have taught mathematics a

Calculus

My background allows me to help you or your child with calculus: 1) I have an advanced background in mathematics, which includes full proficiency in calculus, differential equations and numerical analysis (at a graduate level.) 2) My degrees and professional experience in mechanical engineering have given me practical problem solving insights that allow me to help the student solve difficult or "tricky" calculus problems. Most students learn the math principles, but need to learn how to intuitively apply them! 3) My broad high school math teaching experience (8th grade through 12th grade, including Advanced Math/Precalculus and high school calculus) and one-on-one tutoring have given me the ability to effectively teach any level of high school and college level math up to and including calculus. Calculus, which is taught to advanced (usually highly-gifted) high school students and in college, is necessary for engineering, science and mathematics degrees, and for students seeking other degrees which also require calculus or simply wishing to be well-rounded. Let me help you or your child to not only learn, but to become fully proficient in calculus!

Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I am very familiar with ordinary and partial differential equations, having passed college-level courses in calculus, differential equations, and numerical analysis (which covers numerical techniques to solve ordinary and partial differential equations.) As a mechanical engineering student, various classes solved ordinary and partial differential equations as part of the curriculum, such as the Heat Equation in three dimensions for graduate level heat transfer courses. As a scientist at three DOE National Laboratories, I analytically and numerically solved ordinary and partial differential equations for various research purposes, such as the complex analytic solution (verified by comparing the analytic results with a numerical solution) of radon flow into the basement of a dwelling, expressed using a second order partial differential equation in three dimensions.

Very knowledgeable in Calculus with great teaching abilities

Jon did a great job of helping my daughter with some specific AP Calculus BC topics and specific testing help. He knows the field and was able to help since he is teaching the same topics at Kennesaw State currently. He also helped with some tricks and tips on how to solve problems quickly from a test taking preparation point. Jon was also very flexible in coming to our house which saved a lot of time for me and my daughter. We couldn't have had a better experience. I would certainly recommend Jon to anyone requiring help with Calculus.

Outstanding Tutor and Definitely Dr. Calculus

Professor Jon has been very helpful in explaining calculus in a manner that many instructors do not have the desire or ability to teach. He is very patient, does not look down upon or discourage a student from asking ANY questions. This is a great characteristic of this man and added to his buoyant and courteous personality, he is a tutor who stands above many. Overall, he is great at summarizing and discussing topics so you can have a better understanding, from basic math operations to complex calculus. He has been very flexible in scheduling and his assistance is much appreciated.

Professional, punctual and effective tutor!

Jon has been tutoring my son in preparation for taking his SAT. We have both been happy with his teaching style. Jon is easy going and encouraging. My son feels he really understands the math concepts that Jon reviews with him. I love that now I'm not the only one telling my son that he needs to practice and study in preparation for the test! I feel this is money well spent!

More than a great tutor

Jon was more that a great tutor for my daughter. Not only did he prepare her for the SAT but provided life lessons as well. She enjoyed their conversations beyond math. He instilled confidence in her to pursue excellence in her future plans. She was happy to meet Jon. After their last tutoring session, she came home and told me that she will miss him. Thanks Jon!!

Very patient and effective tutor

Jon was very patient in this first session and my son had a much better understanding of the concepts. He took his time and was consistent, which is a must for my son. We look forward to working with Jon in the next session!
