About Nathan

My full-time online tutoring practice is devoted to providing personalized high-intermediate and advanced level American English lessons to motivated international ESL adults. I tutor ESL Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading online using Skype's well-known capabilities. My clients include many international graduate school scholars, working professionals, and their spouses desiring private American English communications development. To customize meaningful ESL lessons, I reference my Kennesaw State University TESOL Classroom and Online Certification training, Wyzant professional ESL tutoring experience, and the scholarly American English workbooks I recommend. I am currently tutoring or mentoring international ESL clients from Brazil, Canada, China, Hawaii, Germany, Japan, Korea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan. I tutor my ESL clients respectfully and mentor them for life.

I am available to tutor ESL clients, daily, from 12 - 9 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. Unlike the typical ESL classroom lectures offered by others, my lessons are interactive English communication enhancement experiences that proceed at the client's pace. With my positive reinforcement, clients learn to clearly enunciate polite American English phrases that often include conversational phrasal verbs and the idiomatic business expressions used by well-educated North Americans. Throughout my lessons, mispronunciations are politely corrected and subsequently revisited until clients have internalized my respectful reminders.

Each ESL lesson plan begins with polite American English conversation to exercise and strengthen each client's confidence, pronunciation, and the deliberate use of a collocated vocabulary. Next, I ask each client to read aloud from their own Past Mispronunciations List to confirm the efficacy of my corrections. Finally, each client's lesson plan focuses on their own personal English communications Speaking, Listening, Writing, or Reading concerns. Impromptu American English speaking, phrasal verb comprehension, native accent reduction, vowel sound differentiation, academic writing, confident presentation delivery, business English expressions, and well-educated vocabulary are among the most popular options available. Appropriate textbook exercises, lesson handouts, and online listening resources are demonstrated, during class, to enhance between-lesson learning opportunities.

Specialties: My ESL specialties include the modeling, articulation, and teaching of the non-regional standard American English pronunciation and polite speech practices associated with well-educated North Americans. My upper-intermediate and advanced level American English lessons emphasize the multiple-word thought groups, best known as collocations, that North Americans are most comfortable with. I often collaborate with clients to script, proofread, and evaluate the American English oral and written presentations required of them. Astute international graduate school professors and business executives routinely use my private oral English editing services to prepare and practice their presentations.

Popular lesson topics include, but are not limited to:
1. American English Pronunciation
2. Business English Expressions
3. Conversational Phrasal Verbs
4. Academic English Vocabulary
5. Fundamental English Grammar
6. Presentations in English
7. Native Accent Reduction
8. Prepositions In Use

Are you planning a business trip? Let's collaborate to predict and list the questions you are likely to be asked and practice your best American English answers. Similarly, we can read aloud and practice effective telephone English dialogues until you are confident when making and taking phone calls. When we proofread, edit, and practice delivering your PowerPoint presentations, you can expect your public speaking fears to disappear.

Invitation: Many of the long-term ESL scholars that I assist report huge improvements in their American English abilities after meeting with me regularly for as little as three months. My clients often validate my respectful dedication to their English communication goals with the excellent reviews and high lesson-ratings posted on my profile. I am justifiably proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the trust they place in my teaching abilities. I invite you to contact me to discuss your American English learning objectives and to schedule future online lessons.

Background: I became familiar with many of the world's unique cultures during the many years that I traveled, studied, or was employed abroad in all of the following countries and islands: Austria, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Block Island, Canada, China, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hawaii, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam, and throughout the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. I routinely accepted requests to exchange American English with enthusiastic ESL scholars at every stop. In return, my international friends frequently invited me to dine with their families and friends. I continue to add to those cherished international memories.
Thank you for your interest in my ESL tutoring practice. (Updated: August 2017)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Since retiring from business, I have been tutoring American English subjects to Atlanta’s adult international scholars and working professionals. Additionally, it continues to be my pleasure to tutor Atlanta’s native-born adults in English Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading to prepare for examinations of every description. For example, I proofread and provide corrections with college papers, applications, and online course discussions. I time and evaluate oral presentations and participate in job interview preparations by role-playing during question and answer practice sessions. Thank you for your interest in my tutoring services. (Updated September 2017)

ESL/ESOL

While attending Middle school in Thailand with my family and eventually working for the U.S. government in both Germany and Japan, I tutored motivated ESL/ESOL learners while exchanging cultural perspectives. Since settling in Atlanta during 2010, I have tutored American English Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing to a loyal following of international working professionals and college graduate school scholars. To update my professional English communications background, I completed ESL teacher’s specialty classes at Kennesaw State University during 2012 and 2013 to earn my TESOL (Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Teaching Grammar Classroom and Online Certification. I currently tutor adult English learners both face-to-face and online. (Updated September 2017)

Grammar

I enjoy teaching American English Grammar to my ESL clients. In particular, I emphasize the importance of learning to comprehend and use phrasal verbs in everyday conversation. Likewise, I highlight the proper use of causal, comparative, and temporal connectives to better communicate in written and spoken English. In 2013, while earning my Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) University certification, I completed additional coursework entitled "Teaching English Grammar". Along with a thorough college-level review of the ins and outs of the English language, this ESL teacher's course taught me how best to instruct ESL Grammar students. Additionally, I was introduced to a comprehensive set of ESL Grammar instructional texts, workbooks, and interactive PowerPoint graphics. (Updated September 2017)

Proofreading

I am frequently asked to collaborate with writers of every description to proofread their academic or business writing. Typically, I begin each proofreading project by ascertaining exactly what is expected of the finished document before skimming the author's rough draft to confirm that it has all the necessary elements. Next, I like to read the document aloud to reveal any obvious irregularities before suggesting vocabulary changes to enhance, clarify, or smooth the finished paper. Finally, I reread the edited document aloud for the author's final approval and to confirm that it meets or exceeds every expectation. In my experience, collaborating directly with the author during the proofreading step has proven to be the most efficient and cost-effective method. (Updated: August 2017)

Swimming

I offer private 1-to-1 recreational swimming, snorkeling, and water sports safety lessons to adults at every proficiency level in the convenience of their own home, condo, or health club pool. I also have a condo pool available during the week. I typically begin by assessing how accomplished each swimming student is before discussing the steps necessary to accomplish their goals. Typical goals often include understanding the pool's safety rules and uses of rescue equipment, pool etiquette, entering and exiting the pool, independent floating, kickboard exercises, as well as learning to swim and dive using the flutter kick, freestyle crawl, back, breast, and side strokes. Lessons can proceed safely at the student's own pace and progress until fear of the water has been replaced with confidence and a thorough knowledge of safe swimming practices. My documented qualifications started with Red Cross Pool Safety and Lifeguarding and progressed with age, experience, education and licensing into a professional career as a US Coard Guard licensed, PADI certified, and annually inspected Water Ambulance, Scuba Dive Boat, and 40-Passenger Ferry Boat Captain for many years in the Virgin Islands and the American Northeastern seaboard. Thank you for your interest. (Updated April 2017)

Vocabulary

I am frequently called upon to provide English vocabulary assistance to my students. I usually demonstrate how I use a dictionary in conjunction with a thesaurus to expose helpful vocabulary enlarging synonyms. I also reveal the usefulness of Action Verb, Connectives, and Descriptive Adjective lists for the creative writer and journalist. I, also, invariably suggest using a well-respected vocabulary research text and one or more of the numerous online vocabulary resources. I encourage the use of descriptive adjectives to modify key nouns. I promote replacing the typical passive high school verbs with the collegiate action verbs that invariably earn respect. Thank you for your interest in my vocabulary tutoring practices. (Updated September 2017)
