I am a Georgia certified teacher in the fields of ESL and Spanish, with 25 years of experience teaching children and adults at all levels of language proficiency. I earned my MS in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language at Georgia State University with a 4.0 for the degree. I also completed my Specialist degree (EdS) at Georgia State University in Teaching English as a Second Language.
I am open to working with home schooling families, especially with Language Arts support, writing, SAT Reading and Writing, high school compositions, research papers, and individual tutoring for Spanish.
I have worked with students in all content areas, but especially language arts, reading and writing. I also enjoy working with students to support vocabulary development for reading comprehension and content knowledge. I make learning fun, focusing on ways to make language useful, memorable and meaningful as you learn. Because of my broad teaching experience, I know ways to make study time productive and efficient, so I can help with study skills development. My tutoring experience has been varied, including beginning reading, high school writing, and elementary Science, Math and Social Studies. I have worked with reluctant young writers, students with ADHD, and those students who just needed some help with organizing projects and extended assignments. My own rigorous, traditional education and continuing wide reading have prepared me well to teach a broad range of content material at many levels. I have taught English language privately, as well as in public schools, adult education programs and as a community volunteer. I have tutored Spanish at the elementary, high school and college level. I have also worked with adults who wanted to expand their Spanish language knowledge and fluency. I am patient, prompt, well prepared and kind. I hope I can help you or your child in the areas where you need the support of a tutor.
My favorite hobby is sewing and quilting. I have many years of experience sewing clothing and home decor items. I have taught children and adults sewing skills ranging from clothing construction and quilting, to machine applique, use of a commercial pattern, and accessories sewing. I am willing to consider tutoring more than one person at a time, if that is appropriate for the subject. I may adjust my rate depending on the circumstances. Please ask for more details.
Dorothy is innovative in her teaching techniques and incredibly patient with my children. She is kind, punctual and consistently prepares for the lesson in advance. I highly recommend her.
My 9 year old son Max currently sees Fonde weekly. He attends a school that caters to learning differences. While the school does an amazing job, Fonde has been a great boost and support for him. Fonde sees him for Math and Spanish and he gets a little handwriting work also. While Max already does very well with math we wanted to make sure that he was being challenged according to his abilities and Fonde does just that. She keeps him slightly ahead of what he is learning in math class at school (according to Georgia standards), so when it comes time to learn these things in class he is confident and ready to dive in. Fonde doesn't push him beyond his abilities she simply challenges him and encourages him to meet up to his abilities.
Spanish is not currently offered at my son's school in his grade level, but we know that this is the best time for him to learn another language. Fonde keeps Spanish fun and interesting.
Overall, our son looks forward to his time with Fonde every week. She is patient and extremely kind. She has become a part of our family and we feel she is a treasure. We are so thankful that we found Fonde. I highly recommend her services to anyone at any age.
Dorothy is the best teacher I've ever spoken to. She's super qualified, nice, friendly, easy to talk to,It is much more motivation and a lot more fun learning English with her. Looking forward to meeting you next time.
Great first day! My son enjoyed working with Dorothy, and looks forward to working with her again. The details of what she covered in writing was very thorough and most helpful. Thanks!
The children really enjoy their time with Dorothy. She introduces learning through games with our 5 year old and it does help a lot, keeping boredom out of the classroom.
She has the perfect approach and the children are looking forward to seeing her again.
I am an adult who was interested in learning Spanish to further my career. Over the last two months I have had several lessons with Fonde at my home. She is always puntual and prepared for the lessons. Her love for the language is evident and she has a passion for passing it on to others. She is recently retired from a career of teaching which makes her an ideal tutuor; you are one in a classroom with her and she gives you her individed attention.
Whether you are a child/student who needs tutoring or an adult interested in learning the language, I highly recommend Fonde.
Dorothy is a wonderful tutor. She is so kind and patient and smart. She has great games to play with my son and she is good at coaxing him to do things. He performs much better with her than when I work with him! She is extremely reliable too. I highly recommend her!
She is helping my son improve his reading and writing skills. She was on time and very friendly. So far my son and I both enjoy her.
Dorothy helped my daughter get back into her "Spanish" mindset and offered some great suggestions for helping her to prepare for an interview in Spanish. In addition to being an excellent tutor, she is a friendly, interesting person. We would recommend her highly!
Math, reading comprehension. She is working with my special needs daughter and making great progress. She is patient, comes well prepared and creative in her approach.
Fonde is great! She tutored both of my high-school aged children, in beginning and intermediate Spanish. Always shows up on time, very flexible schedule. Her style as a tutor is friendly, organized, and thorough. Both kids felt that Fonde helped them review some areas where they were shaky, and assist in new learning. She also emphasized conversation practice with them, something there were not comfortable doing in class.
Fonde has been tutoring my 2nd grader for about a year. Fonde has improved my daughter's reading & math skills and she is now up to speed after a very tough year with an ineffective teacher. We are back up to speed & grateful. We will continue to work with Fonde!
Fonde creates an environment easy to learn in because she is able to teach and correct my Spanish by providing positive and constructive criticism. She is very encouraging and offers support in any area of Spanish I want to pursue. She is very knowledgeable outside the structures of academic Spanish and is able to point me in the right direction of becoming conversational. Her experiences with other Spanish speakers in different countries and in the states makes her a well rounded tutor and able to explain concepts in a variety of ways. She is very patient and never condescending. I definitely recommend her to anyone interested in learning Spanish of all levels!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have just retired from full time teaching. I taught content subjects in public elementary schools from 1994 through 2016 as an ESL teacher, teaching the English language through content. I worked with classroom teachers every day in the regular classroom, co-teaching all elementary subjects in grades K-5. I was responsible for supporting learning for my students by making the content comprehensible for them, teaching in ways that addressed different learning styles as well as supporting vocabulary and content knowledge. My students were responsible for learning the same content as their native English speaking peers. It was my responsibility to teach the content standards to them as they learned to speak, read and write English. I can teach all K-5 content subjects.
For 22 years I supported elementary curriculum in all subjects for students in grades K-5 who were learning English. Since they needed language for all subjects, I taught all subjects, including Math. I have special expertise in making Math vocabulary and concepts clear, since I taught students who had the additional challenge of not being fluent in English. I can explain and give examples that will help students learn new concepts or understand complex ideas.

I have just retired from full time work after twenty two years of teaching ESL in K-8 public school. I hold a Specialist degree in Teaching and Learning with a major in Teaching English, as well as a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language. I have taught adult learners of English in community programs as well as private institutions and as a tutor. As a teacher, I have conducted professional development classes for my colleagues on the most effective methods for teaching students whose first language is not English. I have had experience teaching refugee children from Africa, children of visiting academics, recent adoptees and immigrant children. I have taught adult students preparing for advanced degrees as well as foreign business people, visiting scholars at local universities and au pairs. In short, my knowledge and experience cover many areas in the field of ESL. I feel extremely well qualified to tutor in this area.
My knowledge of grammar comes from a traditional education of the last generation, as well as from my experience learning foreign languages and studying the teaching of English as a second language. I can help with grammar at any level, for native speakers as well as second language learners.
As a teacher of English as a second or new language, I have studied phonics as a graduate student. I understand the relationship between the awareness of letter sounds and word formation for beginning readers. I am familiar with the importance of phonemic awareness in young learners who are making sense of the English language writing and reading system. I can support early literacy through practice and helping students make the connections between letters and their sounds and how to make words and read words following phonics patterns.
I have taught reading and writing skills to elementary students, first and second grade in particular. The children I teach have the additional challenge of learning English as their second language. I use innovative strategies for teaching sight words in context, writing stories with the child and using creativity and encouragement to foster motivation.
I have coached a high school student for the Reading and Writing portions of the SAT. This student has improved the SAT score by a significant margin.
I have worked with a high school student over many months on academic writing to improve her overall skills and in preparation for the SAT Writing test. Her writing score improved by 40%. She was also a semi-finalist for the Georgia Governor's Honors summer program for which she was required to write an essay as part of the in-person interview process. I have a strong background in English grammar and academic writing and hold two advanced degrees.
I have been sewing since I was twelve years old. I have experience sewing adult and children's clothing, home decor items, such as pillows and curtains, large and small quilts and accessories, such as purses, tote bags, and grocery bags. I have experience teaching sewing and quilting classes to children and adults. Sewing is my favorite hobby! I enjoy sharing this valuable skill.
My college major was Spanish. I speak Spanish fluently and used it daily in my teaching work with a Hispanic population for ten years. I am also proficient in reading and writing Spanish. As a college student, I completed academic work at a Spanish university for a year of academic credit. My continuing use of Spanish for the past 40 years has allowed me to maintain a high level of fluency and accuracy. I love the Spanish language and would be happy to help you with school work or learning Spanish as an adult. My enthusiasm for and knowledge of the language make this work enjoyable for me and for my students.
Since I have been tutoring since 2009, I have helped students use their study time to the best advantage. I can support learning by suggesting ways to study and methods for organizing time and materials for the best outcome. I have over 25 years teaching experience in public schools, as well as ten years teaching adult classes in a continuing education program. My wide teaching experience, as well as my parenting experience with my own children who are now grown, have prepared me to help students study effectively.

I have worked with her on academic vocabulary to sharpen her writing skills. Our work together has resulted in her PSAT score improving my 30 points in writing.
I have tutored a bright high school student whose writing was weak. She worked hard on improving her sentence structure, vocabulary and critical writing. Her teachers recognized her improved writing and used her work as an example for other students. Her SAT writing score increased by 30%. My own writing skill contributed to my success in graduate school. I earned a 4.0 for my Masters in Applied Linguistics, and a 3.9 for my Specialist degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. Both degrees required academic writing at the highest level. I have also had my research work accepted for presentation at local and regional conferences.
