Hello! I'm Dr. B and I'm an educator, scientist, and life long learner. I started my academic journey at Colgate University where I graduated with a BA in Molecular Biology with High Honors in 2007. After graduating I completed a public health research fellowship investigating mechanisms of bacterial infections with scientists at the New York State Department of Health in 2008. I then transitioned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I obtained my PhD in Microbiology in 2013 and finally completed postdoctoral training at The Penn State Hershey Medical Center studying Molecular Epidemiology in 2015 and later Mayo Clinic studying human gut microbiome in 2018. While I enjoy bench science, my true passion is teaching. After completing my research training, I pursued a teaching focused career, and I have been a teaching focused faculty member the last 5 years. I have taught in a range of different institutions, from small private colleges to world leading universities. At those institutions I've designed and delivered college level courses in introductory biology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, scientific literature focused seminars, and human microbiome.

In my career I've had to privilege of working with hundreds of students, from high school to resident physicians and postdocs, in the classroom, during office hours, and in the laboratory and I never tire of the exciting productive interactions that I have with them. In my role as an educator, my goal is to help students successfully engage in the material and create meaningful learning outcomes. Using active learning techniques I work with my students to go beyond rote memorization of facts or tasks and help them build deep conceptual understanding so they can build connections between diverse areas of study and develop essential application, critical thinking and metacognitive skills.

I'm excited to get to know you and to help you on your academic journey. Please don't hesitate to reach out to get started!

Biology

Biology

I'm a scientist and educator with a PhD in Microbiology and 5 years of postdoctoral training focused on bacterial pathogenesis and human-microbiome interactions. I have been a full time teaching focused college professor for the last 4 years and in that time have facilitated lecture, laboratory, and seminar course content in introductory biology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, human microbiome, genetics, and immunology. I place special emphasis on incorporation of active learning techniques to enhance student learning and outcomes and have worked with hundreds of students in my career as a teacher, mentor, and advisor at the high school through resident physician/postdoctoral level.
Genetics

Genetics

The focus of my fellowship and PhD training was bacterial genetics. I incorporated this during my postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic as well while studying host-microbe interactions in the Gut. Lastly I've facilitated both microbial and eukaryotic genetics content in college level biology courses at the introductory through advanced level.
