I believe tutoring is an important learning tool and one that greatly helped me in science courses in college. Over the past four years at UGA, I have developed teaching and communication skills as well as a proficiency in science concepts. I am tutoring now to further strengthen these skills as I prepare for graduate studies in public health at Yale University.
As a Peer Learning Assistant (PLA) in introductory biology and biochemistry courses at UGA, I was able to largely improve not only my science communication abilities, but also my teaching skills. Going beyond the scripted duties of PLAs, I held private tutoring sessions for students and organized and led numerous exam review sessions. Student’s positive feedback on my teaching gave me the confidence to continue working as a PLA for two years. I was also invited by the instructor of the PLA introduction pedagogy course to aid as a TA, encouraging discussion among new PLAs and providing weekly feedback about the course to the instructor and the Director of Biological Sciences.
I believe tutoring is another modality for learning available to all students and not necessarily for remediation alone. As a tutor, I believe that I am responsible for providing a tailored learning environment for students to teach and clarify concepts. I work at a pace and utilize a variety of resources most conducive for individual students. In addition to teaching, I believe I help students understand their own barriers to learning and offer advice on study strategies.

I have excelled in a variety of sciences courses from International Baccalaureate courses in high school to upper level courses at the University of Georgia evident by my high GPA (3.91). I have taken classes such as introductory biology (2 semesters), general and organic chemistry (4 semesters), biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and upper level microbiology courses. I have also scored high on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), which tests science and critical reading skills prior to enrollment in a medical school.

I encourage students and parents to reach out to me to inquire for more information on my past tutoring experiences and tutoring style. I truly enjoy teaching students and seeing them understand concepts and excel in their classes. I am very flexible with tutoring times and locations, but unfortunately, I am unable to tutor at my home.
