About Ashley

I am a PhD student living in Athens. I love teaching, and typically TA at least one course per semester at UGA. I love helping students understand new and challenging material, which I plan to do full-time when I become a college professor. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to sharpen my teaching skills and expand my experience with different courses. And of course, it's nice to make some extra cash since grad student salaries are nothing to write home about. So, that's how tutoring helps me.

How can I help you? Well, despite my success in academia, I actually struggled a bit in high school, and a lot in college. I had to re-take Organic Chemistry 3 times before earning an A! I understand how challenging this course work can be, and I know how to explain it in ways that make sense. In addition to science coursework, I can help with writing in general AND scientific writing, which has it's own set of rules. I also love helping students identify strategies for success in academics in general. As my husband always says, "You need to develop a system that actually works," i.e., don't keep making the same mistakes!

I am currently a PhD student in the biological sciences, and I majored in Environmental Science (B.S.) as an undergrad. I have a thorough grasp on most undergraduate-level scientific concepts now, BUT I did struggle with some of these classes and concepts as an undergrad, so I know how the mix-ups happen AND how to correct them! I can also help with science writing if your classes are writing intensive. I have TA'd 1108 as well as other biology classes at UGA, so I know what your instructors are looking for when they grade your work.

In addition to majoring in Environmental Science, I also majored in English with a Writing concentration (B.A.) as an undergraduate. Writing is such an important skill that transfers to so many careers - including technical writing (which I did for two years before accepting a position at UGA), and the sciences. This past year, I made it a personal goal to read 100 books and I actually achieved it! I also enjoy editing and am currently freelancing as a "writing consultant," where I guide business owners in big-picture brainstorming and organizational structuring of blog posts and marketing material.

In addition to subject-level topics, I can also help with overall learning skills by helping you set up systems for academic success in college/high school. I understand the lure of procrastination and can help you develop strategies to overcome it. Contact me to set up a time and place to meet!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I am currently earning my PhD in the department of Plant Biology (PBIO) at the University of Georgia. Successfully completed coursework includes, but is not limited to: Tree Physiology, Plant Physiology, Photosynthesis, Environmental Measurement and Control, Plant Ecophysiology and Reproductive Ecology, Genetics, Plant Population Ecology. Additionally, I have TA'd Plant Taxonomy, Natural Plants of Georgia, and Organismal Biology.

Organic Chemistry

I am currently earning my PhD in the department of Plant Biology (PBIO) at the University of Georgia.

As an undergrad, I took five (!) Ochem classes: Ochem 1, Ochem 2 (which I withdrew from on the last possible day), Intro to Ochem, then Ochem 1 & 2 again before coming to grad school. It was hard, but I did finally receive A's in the last two classes because I finally understood the patterns and how they could be applied to new mechanisms. Because I struggled so much with this topic before mastering it, I can understand the pitfalls and I know how to help someone work their way out of them.
