University of Georgia (Biology)
Hello! My name is Martha, and I am a rising Junior at The University of Georgia, my major is in Biology and I am on the pre-med track. In the past I have had many amazing tutoring opportunities at both the collegiate and elementary grade level. The thing That I love most about tutoring is that moment when a student's eyes lights up because they finally understand the problem they have been struggling with. That moment is something I look forward to seeing in each of my students again and again. As a student myself I understand the struggles and stress of having to learn difficult new material and how it can overwhelm. I also know that having a good tutor there for you can be of great help.
During my Freshman year, I had the opportunity to tutor students who were struggling with Calculus and Statistics. Tutoring those students provided me with some hands-on experience with assisting students with their classwork, daily homework and test prep. In helping them I found a striking pattern. What they were really having a hard time understanding weren't the actual concepts they were being taught but rather with skills they should have learned already. Skills like order of operations, properties, basic geometry and geometry rules. After seeing this I decided during my Sophomore year to focus on tutoring younger students at the elementary and middle school grade level. Helping those younger student was possibly one of the most rewarding opportunities I have ever had.
In doing so my experience now ranges from college students struggling with Calculus to elementary student who need help improving their reading and math skills. The key in my approach is to not only prep them for their homework and tests but to analyze the areas they are struggling with and why. After identifying where a student is struggling I then begin to create exercises and examples tailored to their specific weaknesses. That way instead of the student, "just getting by," they are establishing a real understanding of the material and subject at hand. This paired with their day to day classes and lessons can really help to improve students.
Patience and dedication are the best tools I can have in my arsenal as both a Math and Reading tutor. Especially for the early grade levels making sure they understand and have a really good foundation is always my top priority. That way when it's time and they go on to the next level they are always prepared.
My availability may vary from semester to semester as I am currently a college student. But if you have any interest to work with me I will do my best to accommodate and match up our schedules. My base rate is $40/hour(negotiable) for in-person lessons and I also offer lesson packages at a discount. Please contact me for more details and I look forward to hearing from you! Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
