About Cristina

I am a certified elementary and middle school teacher who loves helping students discover their abilities and reach their full potential! With a background in youth camps and a love for music (I play the guitar and write songs for my classroom students), my lessons are creative and incorporate a variety of research-supported instructional strategies to engage students in their learning at a conceptual level. To date, I have helped over 200 students increase their math and science scores on both the CRCT and the new Georgia Milestones assessments through engaging hands-on lessons that build understanding one skill at a time until mastery is achieved. In a one-on-one tutoring session, this means that I come to the table with both professional expertise and years of experience in understanding and working with different types of learners. I am patient and am prepared with many strategies and resources for helping you understand new material.

I completed my Master of Education degree at the University of Georgia with a 4.0 GPA, specializing in middle school math and science and also earning certifications for early childhood education. I have taught all subjects to a fifth grade homeroom for two years, specialized in fifth grade math and science for three years, expanded to include fourth grade math and science the following year, and this past year I taught third, fourth, and fifth graders in math and science. My students know me as the fun teacher with a class pet parakeet who brings her guitar to school and sings educational songs with them, and parents know me as a teacher who inspired, helped, and cared for their student and who made learning (even math!) fun. I believe anyone can master content with hard work and proper guidance and encouragement. Knowing and understanding my students well is an important part of helping them grow, and working one-on-one in a tutoring environment is ideal for addressing the needs of individual learners – I will bring years worth of experience, resources, and strategies to each tutoring session with you, ready to customize my instruction to your needs.

Having taught elementary school math for seven years, I have become very familiar with different ways to help students understand different math concepts, common misconceptions and difficulties that can arise, and what ideas students need to understand and learn in order to build on math that comes in higher grade levels. It is important to break down tasks into smaller parts in order to master each step. For example, often at elementary school levels, reading comprehension can be a barrier to understanding what a math problem is asking, so, in that case, I teach strategies for reading math problems and making concrete connections that allow students to use step-by-step methods to make sense of the question and decide on problem-solving strategies to use. When we have our first tutoring session, I will ask you about your goals and help create a plan specifically for you that will provide challenging and achievable steps towards reaching those goals.

I am very familiar with the Common Core standards as I have been a part of the transition to this new curriculum in the school system and have been teaching the math Common Core standards to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders this past school year. I am experienced in teaching students in the “Common Core” style of building understanding through models and written explanations, and am prepared to guide you through the steps needed to achieve success in your studies!

I am generally available for tutoring on weekdays from 10am-8pm, and I can travel to students or meet them online. I am willing to do a group-tutoring session at a discounted rate; if that is an interest, just contact me with your needs, and we can work out the details!

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am very familiar with the Common Core standards as I have been a part of the transition to this new curriculum in the school system over the past couple of years and have been co-teaching math Common Core standards to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade this past school year. I am familiar with both the standards and the methods of teaching that build understanding through models and written explanations.

Elementary (K-6th)

I completed my Master of Education degree at the University of Georgia with a 4.0 GPA, specializing in middle school math and science and also earning certifications for early childhood education. I have been teaching at an Elementary School for the past seven years.

Guitar

I have been playing acoustic guitar for about 10 years. I can instruct beginning-level players on how to tune their instrument, how to play chords, exercises for strengthening their hands, good playing techniques, and strumming patterns.

Study Skills

One of my goals as an educator is to help students learn how to learn - to enable my students to learn and understand material independently so that, when they leave my classroom, they will be able to continue their academic success. Developing study skills is an important component of becoming an independent learner, and it is something that can be learned. I teach my students how to set challenging but achievable/realistic goals, where to find helpful resources, different methods for organizing materials, how to self-monitor growth and strategically set goals for each study session, and how to stay motivated and work in proper breaks and rewards in the process of learning new material.
