Thank you for your interest me as a tutor for yourself or for someone you love.

I have taught all age groups and abilities, including middle-school students in Duke's TIP (Talent Identification Program), high school, and college--undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members at the University of Georgia. With a BA and MAT from Duke University and a MA and PhD for UGA, I have a strong background in language and literature, but my professional career has focused on teaching and learning. Through my position at the UGA Center for Teaching and Learning, I have kept up with the latest research on educational psychology, motivation, metacognition (thinking about thinking, including study skills), and teaching writing.

I have three years of teaching public high school English, eight years of teaching freshman composition (ENGL 1101 and 1102), and ten years of teaching literature survey classes. In all of my English teaching, I stress the recursive writing process that breaks down projects into stages with a strong emphasis on purpose, audience, and revision. As a tutor, I believe in teaching how to write through a specific writing project. I have found one-on-one tutoring with formative, constructive feedback to be the best means of improving a person's writing.

Besides my BA, MA, and PhD in English as well as a Masters of Arts in Teaching, I have taught for over 25 years, worked with hundreds of students in one-on-one tutoring settings, published a scholarly article as well as articles for newsletters, and served as an editor for an international teaching journal.

I am currently the Director of Admissions, Registrar, and English teacher at Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School in Athens, GA.

Please feel free to contact me to inquire if I sound like the right tutor for you and your goals. While I am available for single sessions, noticeable improvement beyond an immediate project will usually entail multiple sessions.
