Piedmont College Early Childhood Education (Early Childhood Educ)
I am a college student who currently holds a Bachelor's Degree from Piedmont College in Early Childhood Education. I grew up with a mother who was a teacher and she passed that love to me. While she taught high school, my passion is teaching the younger children. My strengths include English and Reading, but I am proficient in the other subjects as well.
I currently have experience in the classroom, as I have logged a year of student teaching for my two degrees. While doing my student teaching, I was responsible for teaching reading for my third grade class. I also have experience as a long term sub in a fifth grade reading classroom. I have at my disposal all of my lesson plans from my college career, plus lessons planned while in the classroom. I also bring a general love of reading and learning! Aside from reading and English, I love science and all the fun stuff you can do with experiments! History is another fun subject to teach, as there is so much role playing you can do to learn. Math is my weakest subject, but I believe even that can be made fun and much easier to learn.
My mother was a high school English teacher. My whole life revolved around reading and a love of the English language. I have an expansive vocabulary and would love to pass it along to others! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently hold an Associate's Degree from Athens Technical College in Early Childhood Education and am currently working on my Bachelor's Degree at Piedmont College in the same field. I have six months experience in a third grade classroom between my practicum and student teaching experience. I also still have all of my lesson plans from both time periods.
Phonics is the basis for which letter and sound recognition come from. Without proper letter and sound recognition, including blends and diagraphs, students will struggle with reading. As a student teacher, I assisted a student who could only recognize three letters when I started with her. I worked with her for 45 minutes a day, five days a week, for six weeks. At the end of our time together, she recognized 24 letters by sight and all 26 by sound. She was able to both write and spell her first and last name. At the end of my internship, she made a card, where she wrote multiple words, something she has not been able to do before.
I am the daughter of an English/Reading teacher, as well as the proud holder of an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. I'm currently working on my Bachelor's Degree. Reading has always been my passion and while studying for my Associate's Degree, I had the opportunity to teach reading in my student teaching semester.
