About Matt

Over the past ten years I've taught, mentored, and tutored over 1,200 students. Helping them find their passion, learn new skills, and advance their careers had been the most rewarding part of working in higher education. I hope to continue working as a mentor and tutor through WyzAnt.

I earned a PhD in social/cultural psychology with a special emphasis on research design and analysis. I have taught about a dozen statistics and research methods courses, including an introductory statistics course at UC Berkeley this semester. I also continue to provide psychological and statistical consulting to universities, non-profits, and corporations.

As a tutor, I have found that fostering motivation and confidence can be just as important as learning the material. I try to increase intrinsic motivation while making learning fun. In this way, students continue to be successful in the long term.

In addition to my teaching and consulting, I supervised undergraduate researchers (including three award-winning thesis projects) and helped run a renowned social justice research lab. My research has been published in the field's top journals and I have presented my work at multiple international conferences.

I also dedicated considerable energy toward improving mentoring and advising policy in higher education. Much of my research and service focuses on improving mentoring for traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education.

In the past 2.5 years, I've shifted my focus toward providing free financial advising to the people who need it most. I've earned my CFP Candidacy and currently work as a Financial Planning Associate with Arete Wealth Strategists. Meanwhile, I teach financial literacy with Job Corps, the YWCA, and the Financial Planning Association.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

As a cultural psychologist, I have repeatedly called on my knowledge of American and world history. For example, much of my research focuses on changing definitions of race and ethnicity over the past 400 years. Before becoming a cultural psychologist, I was briefly a history major (with a focus on American and Latin American history) and, before then, I scored a 5 on the AP American History exam.

Career Development

I've mentored and taught over 1,000 undergraduates as an instructor and as a researcher; with my direct guidance, dozens of my former students advanced to graduate school, won prestigious awards and scholarships, and secured jobs in their chosen fields. For 2.5 years, I served on the UC Berkeley Advising Council, an administrative unit tasked with reforming academic advising for undergraduates with a special emphasis on career development. I have published research on career development for people from traditionally underrepresented groups.

Finance

I am a Financial Planning Associate with a financial technology company. I am also currently enrolled in the Personal Financial Planning Program with UC Berkeley Extension and will advance to CFP candidacy in November, 2015. In the past year, I taught three personal finance courses to UC Berkeley undergraduates, hosted one-off personal finance seminars to graduate students, consulted a business professor as he designed a personal finance course for graduate students, and consulted with the UC Berkeley Financial Aid office's personal finance peer mentoring program. I was also involved with multiple campus committees on revenue generation for the university and for the psychology department.

Government & Politics

As a cultural psychologist, I have repeatedly called on my knowledge of American government and its legal system. Most notably, I am a co-author on an amicus brief to the US Supreme Court. Before becoming a cultural psychologist, I was briefly a political science major and, before then, I scored well on the AP US Government exam.

Microsoft Excel

I have over 20 years experience using Microsoft Excel. I am very familiar with using formulas, pivot tables, and performing basic statistical analyses.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have over 10 years experience using Microsoft PowerPoint. For the past 7 years, I have used PowerPoint to create lecture aids. I am familiar with technical aspects (such as how to insert complex animation sequences) and design aspects (such as when to use text vs. pictures vs. animations). At the University of Georgia, I hosted a workshop on how to best use PowerPoint as an educational tool.

Microsoft Word

I have over 20 years of experience using Microsoft Word as both a creative and technical writer.

Proofreading

I have multiple publications in well regarded psychology journals and textbooks. As a member of multiple research labs, I have edited dozens of my colleague's manuscripts over the past decade.

Psychology

I have a PhD in social psychology with emphases on culture, organizations, intergroup relations, ethnic identity, and mentoring. I also have a master's degree in psychology with an emphasis on research methodology and analysis. I have been involved in psychological research for over ten years and have multiple publications in well regarded psychology journals. I have also taught various psychology courses for the past 7 years.

Public Speaking

I have presented my research at dozens of local, regional, and international conferences; most notably, I have participated in three symposiums where I spoke before hundreds of internationally renowned research psychologists. I have taught over a dozen college courses at the University of Georgia and UC Berkeley. I receive very positive teaching evaluations and have received the highest recognition for a graduate student instructor at the University of Georgia. Since I was a child, I have sung and performed comedy before audiences ranging up to about 150 people.

Social Studies

I received a PhD in social psychology, a multi-discipline "hub" science that combines research from psychology, sociology, public policy, law, economics, business, and other fields. My research is particularly multi-disciplinary as evidenced by my publication record. I took 10 AP courses in high school, including every social studies course, and received high marks on every exam. I have a minor in history.

SPSS

I used SPSS professionally for 7 years as a psychology researcher. I am familiar with a variety of techniques, from basic descriptive statistics to factorial ANOVA and exploratory factor analysis. For 5 semesters at the University of Georgia, I taught undergraduates how to use SPSS in a research analysis course.

Statistics

I have a PhD in social psychology, a field with a strong emphasis in sophisticated quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and analytic techniques. I have also worked for 7 years as a statistical consultant in a wide range of fields, from forestry to human resources to the epidemiology division of the Food and Drug Administration. I have also taught research methods and analysis for 10 semesters and mentored dozens of undergraduate student researchers and other graduate students.

Writing

I have multiple publications in well regarded psychology journals and textbooks. As a member of multiple research labs, I have edited dozens of my colleague's manuscripts over the past decade. In addition to my technical writing, I have been a creative writer since childhood and have a couple (admittedly minor) awards for some of my stories.

Easy to work with & Knowledgeable!

Matt was hired to help my younger sister, who attends UGA, with statistics. She said that he explained the information very well. He was also easy to get into contact with and set up a session. Thanks Matt!
