Hello! My name is Kate and I moved to Athens from Tampa, Florida. I grew up in Northeast Ohio. I attended The Ohio State University for my BA in English and my MEd in middle childhood education.
In 2008 I began teaching middle school communications in Ohio. During that time I have tutored numerous subjects and grade levels. Including 5th grade OAA testing, 3rd-6th grade reading 5th grade math and middle school homework club advisor. In 2012 I began teaching middle school language arts in Tampa. I am trained in common core state standards and use a wide variety of learning strategies to help students grow. In 2015 I started teaching 6th grade in Georgia.
I use skill and drill, CGI, practice and real world examples. I have strong communication skills and can also help students with public speaking and communication. I enjoy working with students of all ages and pride myself on building a rapport with children and parents.
I spent over a year in Tampa working for a national tutoring chain. I mostly worked tutoring high school students in ACT and SAT test prep. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher grades 4-9. I have experience subbing in all elementary grades as well as tutoring. I have taken classes on teaching early childhood skills such as reading fundamentals and building math skills.
I am a certified teacher and have passed all of my Praxis exams. I took the Middle Childhood Language Arts 196/200, Social Studies 178/200, and Teaching and Learning 192/200*high honors. I have also gone through the Praxis 3 evaluation and passed.
I have a BA in English from The Ohio State University. I have spent the last four years developing and building my own curriculum for interpersonal communications, including teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade students how to listen, use body language, write and give speeches. Public speaking specifics include rate, volume, tone, hand movements, posture, movement, and descriptive wording.
In today's education system study skills are a MUST!! I am trained in: Power Reading (skimming/scanning), visualization, CGI and that is just to start. I also help students improve their organization and time management. I explain to students how to focus their studying on key ideas and supporting details. I am also trained in test taking strategies.
