About Richard

I have been tutoring both high school and college students for 30 years. As a graduate student at UGA, I taught symbolic logic four times. In the past year, I have taught four SAT math preparation classes at Athens Academy. For the last eight years I have been tutoring student athletes at UGA and upper and middle school students at Athens Academy. Math tutoring is my vocation.

I approach mathematics more as an art than a science. Math as an art means that it is a skill perfected by practice--an "activity"--not a spectator sport. An analogy may help clarify this point: Learning mathematics is more like learning how to play tennis than it is like learning the facts of U.S. history. This approach affects my tutoring in that I try to find ways to improve the student's skills in solving problems both correctly and as efficiently as possible.

For math students: My special areas of teaching expertise include effective algebra habits, traditional algebra word problems (e.g., motion, mixture, coins, work), SAT math, ACT math, logarithms, trigonometry, trigonometric limits, related-rates, optimization, l'Hopital's Rule, Riemann sums, u-substitution, trigonometric integrals, trigonometric substitution, partial fractions, sequences, series convergence tests, mathematical induction, proof-discovery strategies, and formal proof writing.

For logic students: My special areas of expertise include effective truth-table construction, truth trees, "Fitch" style proof systems (intelim rules with scope lines) , techniques for constructing proofs, translating English into symbolic code, basic set theory, and categorical syllogisms.

When I am not tutoring, I am often writing books to help math and logic students. I have several books that are available on Amazon.

I have a BA in Mathematics (SNHU), an AB in Economics and Philosophy (UGA) PBK and a MA in Philosophy (UGA).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Logic

I taught approximately twelve classes in symbolic logic and critical thinking while a graduate student at the University of Georgia, and symbolic logic was my special area of study while a philosophy major. The topic of my Master's thesis concerned C.S. Peirce's Existential Graphs (a graphical logic system that looks something like Venn diagrams). I have tutored symbolic logic since 1986.
