About Irtaza

I earned my Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. I love the STEM subjects and my goal is to inspire you to gain an appreciation of these subjects - without getting overwhelmed.

My tutoring is first focused on me. I try to understand a few things first. Specifically I would like to:

1. Understand where you are - relative to your goals. That is, are you just stuck on a topic, or the equations scare you always, or the perennial question: "why am i learning all this"?
2. Understand your learning capabilities and obstacles. That is, do you learn best by understanding concepts, by repetition, or by demonstration. And whether maintaining focus is your challenge, or are there always small mistakes that pull your grades down.

Based on the above, I will customize tutoring - with the overall goal of your success and giving the best value for your money and time.

In general, you should expect to gain deeper understanding of concepts, identify your challenges, and overcome obstacles.

When working on ACT Math section, you will typically have one minute to solve the problem. In the new SAT Math, you have a little more time (75 seconds). And the problem may come from a variety of core concepts, including pre-algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and such. I have extensive experience in observing your 'stuck' points. I will be focusing on timeliness of your responses - making you efficient in solving problems. That's what engineers do :) I have taught many middle and high schoolers - including my kids - and they have done exceptionally well in their Math sections of these tests.

The ACT Science section includes a wide range of science content but primarily it tests your "scientific skills" more than your knowledge. You are expected to read and interpret graphs, charts, and tables, analyze differing opinions, and understand the scientific method and study design. And you have to apply all of the skills in less than a minute on average - 40 times around. In doctoral studies, that is what we do - in general. We read hundreds of papers, go over the analyses of our peers and seniors and analyze these. I will be cultivating these skills in you to gain expediency and accuracy in your thinking. I have trained many middle and high schoolers - including my kids - and they have done exceptionally well in the science sections.

I have taught several students - including my kids - to prepare for the PSAT. For many students, this is the first time they experience a high-intensity timed test that requires a wide variety of skills in math and logic. I will be looking at their focus, reasoning, and math foundations, and time management skills - with a view to 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'.

Feel free to contact me via email. When I am your tutor, you will also get faster ways to access me outside the tutoring sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I am a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (2003).

My MS was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE).
My BS was in Electrical Engineering.

I have taken graduate level courses in control systems, intelligent systems, computer and digital designs.

I have been programming since 1986. My first language was C. Since then I have written a distributed Operating system in Module-2 (1992), tens of thousands lines of code in C++ (2001-4), Visual Basic (2002-2010), Java (2006-now), HTML5/PHP (2003-now), Objective C (2008-now)

MATLAB

I have done extensive Matlab during my PhD and R&D work after graduation. I have used several toolboxes and I am most familiar with Image Processing toolbox. My PhD qualifier exam used this toolbox in which I created Fuzzy Image Morphology operators on top of the image morphology operations in Matlab.

My thesis also generated several thousand lines of script in which I analyzed different prediction algorithms in Matlab.

One of my recent ongoing projects has a PHP backend.

Visual Basic

I have developed extensive applications in VB6 and VB.net. These applications included multiple forms, used 3rd party libraries (such as DALSA cameras' interfacing). These also included real-time image collection and data processing and analysis applications distributed over the network.

Web Design

I have extensively designed and developed websites. I am very comfortable with HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3. I am also very aware of the backend technologies, including PHP, Java, Node.js

I have also created sites in Joomla and Wordpress.

Excellent Tutor. Very knowledgeable and a quick study! — This was my first time meeting Irtaza. He had quite a challenge in front of him as I am 6 weeks deep into Computer Arch & Design. He made quick work understanding where I was at and where I was needing help. He helped untangle my thoughts around the following in a single session: 1. Number Systems (Binary to Hex and Binary to Octal and Binary to Decimal) 2. Boolean Algebra (AND,OR,NOT,NOR,eXclus ...
