About Felicia

Hello prospective students!
I think the best way to introduce myself is to jump right in. So, without further ado…here is a summary of my professional background:
I am a former law enforcement officer with 18+ years’ experience in both community corrections and fraud investigations. I am an experienced college educator & law enforcement/fraud trainer. I have taught Introduction to Criminal Justice, Issues in Law Enforcement, specialized law enforcement training topics, fraud awareness, fraud investigations, safety ("stranger danger" styled) and career presentations at the elementary and post-secondary level. I have also served in the capacity of a field training and academy training officer. Most recently I had the pleasure of working on a project where I was tasked with writing a police entrance test study guide and practice tests. It was an awesome experience and I hope to be involved with future endeavors creating content and lesson plans for the Criminal Justice Career and Technical arena.

On the personal side (and some of my philosophy):
My family and I recently relocated to GA from the west coast to be closer to family. I hold an M.S., B.S., and AAS in Criminal Justice, as well as a Graduate Certificate in College Teaching and Learning. Most recently I have begun an accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of Southern California, Rossier School of Education; where I am concentrating in a K-5/early childhood education credential. As such, I am studying for the GACE certification tests in Political Science and Early Childhood Education, (testing dates in December 2015 and February 2016), as well as working through a self-paced CCIE (Certified Cyber Investigations Expert) course. In addition to tutoring, I currently substitute teach (K-12) for two school districts in North East Georgia. Whew! Despite having many things to keep me busy, I am most passionate about teaching and tutoring in the Criminal Justice concentration.

Beyond the realm of my endeavors lies the single most important aspect of my life: family. Having recently survived the emotional roller coaster of seeing off my eldest child to a world traveling career in the Air Force, I am now just a dedicated partner to my fiancee (our high school football captain back in the days of yore), pack-mom to an amazing rescued pit bull, and my most cherished roll of mom to a thriving high school student; truthfully, my daughter has become my hero. Despite battling learning disabilities (speech delayed, dyslexia, ADHD), she has successfully battled her way into general-ed courses, is an honor roll student, and has become quite self-confident in her ability to navigate even the most difficult subjects.

She is the best testament to my commitment to a student's learning experience. I feel that a student can succeed in most, if not all, settings if they have a stake in the outcome. Giving students a chance to take the driver's seat can be empowering; offering students a personalized learning experience can also make the difference between self-promotion and self-defeat. In my daughter's case, the ticket was to adhere to a multisensory learning strategy and encourage creative learning. Despite struggling with reading comprehension, expression, and vocabulary deficits, she has demonstrated that she is capable of acing tests: once the study material is revamped to present core curriculum ideals in a different context (her context!)

My philosophy embodies the tenets of engaging learning experiences, creative assessment techniques, and collaboration. As a tutor it is my goal to provide the specifics that you, or your student, need. If repetition and memorization are the ticket, then that it the approach we will strive for. If conceptualization of ideals is where the struggle lies, then let's try a new approach. If effective study habits and strategies give you a case of agita, then I will revitalize your approach with a customized study plan. In all, my goal is to provide you with the most effective and engaging approach to learning.

Feel free to contact me with questions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I am an advanced degree holder in the subject area (M.S. Administration of Justice, B.S. Criminal Justice, and AAS in Criminal Justice), an experienced post-secondary instructor (adjunct Criminal Justice), and corporate fraud/law enforcement trainer. In addition I hold a graduate certificate in College Teaching and Learning. I have completed substitute teacher training and am preparing to sit for the GACE – Political Science state certification test.

I have developed curriculum and course material for criminal justice college courses and law enforcement training courses based on assigned texts and syllabus requirements, created hands-on interactive projects to supplement coursework, and lessons that adhere to department missions, policy regulations, and state training requirements for officers. In addition, I have developed content and test banks for a police entrance test study guide.
