Cornell University (Fine Arts.)
I am a 2013 graduate from Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art and Planning with a B.F.A. and minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I have tutored Spanish and English for over three years. I accommodate different learning styles and love working with students that have a hard time learning Spanish. Tutoring Spanish one on one fulfills me greatly and I relish seeing students apply skills in learning foreign language to their other subjects. For students that are starting to learn Spanish, I bring my own supplemental material that explains grammar concepts in English and Spanish in a way for parents without the language background to understand as well.
During my freshman year of college I edited peers’ English papers each week; Spanish, English, art history and visual arts are my strengths. I took five art history courses as part of my degree path and have excellent study strategies to help remember all those date, name, visual and conceptual details. During my English and Spanish lesson plans I work to address not only aspects covered in the classroom, but essential components to learning a language. These include refining knowledge of grammatical concepts, listening comprehension, speaking practice, pronunciation, writing composition, reading comprehension, and vocabulary retention. I make sure that students repeat out loud, practice speaking, and gain confidence quickly. I am organized, punctual, knowledgeable, and will travel to your location if that is where your student focuses best. Everyone should be able to feel accomplished and enthusiastic about learning a language, whether it be foreign or a native tongue. Emma has been tutoring my son in Spanish. I cannot thank her enough for a dedication, patience and enthusiasm.
Excellent! Emma has been a wonderful fixture in our son's life. In just a short time Emma has increased our son's knowledge in Spanish and with continued support we see our son passing his Spanish I and II. Thanks Emma, we truly appreciate you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have prior experience tutoring Algebra I and am very comfortable with the middle school and high school age level. I've also extensively tutored test prep for the ACT and SAT, covering the Algebra sections many times. I do not tutor test prep privately, but love to help students struggling in their math courses.
As part of my Fine Arts degree, I completed five college-level art history courses. I also earned a 4 on the AP Art History exam while in high school.
In high school I earned a 4 on the AP Language exam and a 4 on the AP Literature exam. I also took 3 English courses during college and spent my freshman year editing peers' papers. Because I pursued a second language, I have fastidious attention to grammatical concepts.
I am very familiar with tutoring PreAlgebra. I want to reinforce strong "problem solving" habits while kids are young. This includes organizing scratch work, retaining properties of numbers, and developing mathematical skills that will aid students in standardized test scenarios. I especially love tutoring inequalities and how to understand negative numbers!
I am experienced with explaining reading passages to SAT and ACT students. I also excelled in college level English courses. I tutor critical reading and analysis to middle school, high school, and college level students.
I have tutored Spanish for over two years. I have a minor in Spanish and a minor in Latin American Studies from Cornell University. I began studying Spanish at age ten, earned a 5 on the AP Spanish exam in high school, and have traveled through Spain on my own for a month.
I am a trained StudyPoint tutor and have experience tutoring writing sections of standardized tests. However, I do not tutor test prep privately. In college I also evaluated peers' essays and had to write for many classes. I scored 4's on AP Language/Composition and AP English Literature in high school.
