About Valerie

My love for English as a subject is what drives me to continue tutoring. Tutoring began for me as an undergraduate student at Seton Hall University and continued throughout graduate school at The Hall. This passion has allowed me to successfully tutor students of all ages and backgrounds. I've worked as an Adjunct English Instructor at several, local community colleges when I lived in Connecticut. I also worked as a tutor in two local school districts there. It was great to see students progress and improve their reading and writing skills over a period of time and become confident writers. Now that I've recently relocated to Georgia, I hope to continue helping students improve their English skills and their knowledge of the English language.
I am a flexible tutor with an understanding nature. I totally understand when appointments have to be cancelled or rescheduled. Therefore, I follow a 24-hour cancellation policy which usually works well for both parties. Appointments can be rescheduled. My instructional philosophy is to meet students where they are and develop short and long-term goals that will help them succeed without feeling pressured or overwhelmed.
English can be a confusing subject for some students, but it can become easier with practice. I specialize in the writing process, paragraph development, essay writing, research paper writing, analyzing literature, basic grammar rules, punctuation usage, and basic reading skills.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals. Best wishes for future success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I have a graduate degree in English and I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in cursive handwriting. In addition, I have excellent handwriting skills and penmanship. I think it is a lost skill that is not being taught consistently throughout elementary schools, yet I feel students still need to know how to write. I am very passionate about sharing and continuing the art of handwriting.
