Due to my experience teaching composition and literature at the college level, and in the course of obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in literature, I have gained a wide breadth of knowledge about literature, history, and composition. In addition to my qualifications, I am also GACE and PRAXIS certified to teach both English and Reading at the high school level.
I currently work as a lecturer at the University of North Georgia where I teach multiple sections of English 1101 and 1102 every semester. In some cases these classes are almost entirely comprised of dual-enrolled high school students. In order to effectively teach these classes, I am required to develop lesson plans that help students with a variety of learning styles and talent levels. I have also had the pleasure of teaching several sections of World Literature, and in these courses it is my responsibility to introduce students to literature from different cultures and time periods. As we learn about the literature, we also learn about the historical and cultural setting from which the work emerged. I truly enjoy teaching World Literature because the study of literature and history is something I am passionate about, and this passion, coupled with my knowledge of both subjects makes my class both highly informative and engaging.
Apart from my work at the University of North Georgia, I have spent the last year working as a tutor at Huntington Learning Center. At Huntington, I have had the opportunity to interact with elementary, middle, and high school students who struggle with reading comprehension and writing. These students come to Huntington with their own unique set of skills and struggles, and I am required to find an approach that works best for each student. I also do a wealth of SAT/ACT tutoring. My work at Huntington will serve me well at Athens Academy because it has increased my ability to differentiate instructional techniques, and it has allowed me to work, one on one, with high school students of different skill levels.
Tutoring appeals to me because I really love teaching, and would relish the opportunity to help students of different ages and skill levels improve their grades. I am confident that I would be a great asset to my students because of my skills and experiences. Due to my experience teaching composition and literature at the college level, and in the course of obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in literature, I have gained a wide breadth of knowledge about literature, history,
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
