About Janet

I am a Master's level Certified Secondary Mathematics Teacher, and also teach math on the college level. I have been tutoring students in all subjects of middle, high school and college mathematics for 16 years, and have seen many students greatly improve their understanding, confidence, and grades in math as a result of my individual work with them.

I believe that students who understand the "why" underlying the mathematics come to appreciate its value and are therefore more successful. I work closely with each student to identify the keys to his or her comprehension, and then concentrate on helping his or her mind make the connections necessary for understanding and mastering the subject.

My subject expertise includes pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, college algebra, statistics and calculus. I can also support your preparation for the SAT or ACT. Please feel free to contact me to help you be successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is an extremely important topic, as it is the foundation for all of mathematics beyond arithmetic. I provide support for those students who need it as well as an increased understanding of the subject beyond what they learn in class. Students gain a great deal of competence and confidence in their mathematical abilities.

Algebra 2

Algebra is an extremely important topic, as it is the foundation for all of mathematics beyond arithmetic. I explain the concepts and help students master the mechanics of doing more advanced algebra topics. Students gain a great deal of confidence and competence and in their mathematical abilities.

Geometry

As a secondary math teacher I have been teaching Geometry for 8 years. I am aware of how the subject is approached in the traditional way, as well as how it is now integrated with algebra in the new Common Core/GPS curriculum.

Prealgebra

I teach the foundation of algebra, known as Pre-Algebra, to students of all ages and learning styles. I believe that explaining the underlying concepts of the topic is critical for students to be able to create their own understanding.

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is taught on three different levels and includes many different advanced algebra topics that lead up to the study of calculus. I have taught some of these levels and tutored students on the plethora of topics covered in this subject. I have seen students improve their understanding and competence to a great extent.

TEAS

I am very familiar with the topics tested on the TEAS exam, and have helped several students receive passing scores. I teach mathematics and therefore know the math sections, and I am very familiar with the grammar that is assessed. I also have a background in healthcare and am familiar with the topics covered in the science section.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an integral part of advanced algebra and pre-calculus. I have taught this subject for many years and have developed students' understanding of the subject.
