##### About Jamila

I earned a BS degree in Engineering from Tuskegee University in 1998 and an MS Degree in Engineering from Florida State University in 2000.

I have been a passionate tutor since my high school years. I continued tutoring in undergraduate and graduate school in subject areas from chemistry to calculus. I taught college algebra at Lexington Community College in Lexington, KY. I also tutored math students at Westchester Community College in Westchester County, NY. My strengths are being able to communicate concepts clearly and in a way students can relate to. I am conscience of the student’s weaknesses and abilities. My tutoring methods allow students to fully understand mathematics without getting frustrated. I can adapt to their learning abilities and offer them the best approach to soak up the information.

My teaching approach begins with the idea that mathematics concepts can be taught in a manner that allows everyone to understand. My primary objective is to provide students with a set of tools that helps them attain academic success and growth, to build and expand their knowledge and critical thinking skills, and to develop as individuals. My approach encourages students to "learn by doing" through classroom activities, visual guides, interactive lessons, real world application and hypothetical situations. A good tutor motivates students to want to learn and retain the material. Stellar students benefit when instructors challenge them to move towards higher level applications of the material. Struggling students need someone who can see beyond their mistakes and into their thought process. I strive to convince students they are developing valuable skills for their lives by regularly connecting the material to their everyday lives. My teaching techniques have improved with each teaching experience. I continue to look for new ideas and technologies that can improve my teaching effectiveness. In the end, I want to share my passion for mathematics and learning, leaving the student excited about using the skills in their own lives. My goal is to meet students where they are and take them where they need to go.

I like to break down whatever skill I am teaching in the simplest form at first. This means explaining the concept of the skill in a way that the student can understand what it is we are trying to do. I also try to use a pictorial representation of the skill if that is needed. After that I show them how I work a problem with that particular skill so they can see firsthand what the thought process is and the steps that are needed to use that particular skill, whether it is adding fractions or solving equations, etc. Then I give the student a problem to do on their own while I guide them through the steps. If they get off on a particular step I correct them immediately and get them on the right path. Once I feel they understand how to work a problem, I give them a problem to do without me watching them and see if they can get the answer right by themselves. I then correct the problem and if they got the answer right, "Great!" If they got an incorrect answer I then analyze which step the student made their mistake on and we work together to correct it.
