My name is Melissa, and I am a graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. During my time at the university, I also participated in research as well as various science and math courses due to my pre-med curriculum. I am currently studying microbiology at the University of South Florida, and I graduated from Walter Sickles High School with an unweighted GPA of 3.98 and a weighted GPA of 6.26.
I am very determined and organized with a desire to witness success and progress in others. I have tutored various subjects such as Genetics and Biology through the 4-H after-school program at Pineridge Elementary School. I have also lead studying groups and tutored university students in European History, American History, Civics, Criminology, English, and Writing. Due to my major and my pre-med courses, I have taken classes successfully in a wide variety of subjects.
I believe to progress in a subject, practice and organization are key, along with the ability to analytically understand the questions. It is my aim to not only allow for the complete understanding of the subject, but to also build a sturdy foundation for future learning and academic endeavors. Since every student is unique, I fit my teaching style to the individual. I emphasize practice and organization, as well as positive, personal interaction.
My experience in tutoring is predominately with Mathematics, English, Writing, and History, but I also greatly enjoy teaching other subjects as well. I was very impressed with Melissa. She was able to clarify the algebra lessons and instill confidence in my daughter's test taking. My daughter aced her last 2 tests after meeting with Melissa.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have successfully completed my criminology major and have participated in mock trials during my attendance at the University of Florida. I have taken courses in a wide variety of courses such as criminological theory, homicide, and law and society.
I have successfully completed both Biology I and II, as well as Genetics. In addition, I have taken courses to supplement my knowledge in Genetics including Cell Biology and Cell Metabolism.
I have taken courses in sociology specializing in gender, social class, crime, and social inequality. Courses that I have taken include Men and Masculinities and Deviance. In addition, I have taken many women studies and criminology courses which emphasize sociological conditions in both a historical and current context.
I have edited essays and tutored in writing for students at the University of Florida. Essays that I have edited include personal statements for medical school, college applications, science reports, and final essays for college courses. I have scored in the 700s for both reading and writing in the SAT. In addition, I am experienced in writing historical based, scientific based, and sociological based reports.
