About Melody

I began tutoring in 2011 - my junior year of college. My academic background is in math and social sciences: psychology and education. Thus, my focus is on students struggling in math or preparing for standardized exams. Having studied for many different types of exams/ placement tests, I am well versed with the test prep process. I have successfully helped a student increase her SAT score that garnered her acceptance to one of Florida's top liberal arts schools. I draw on my life experiences and the experiences of my students to create scenarios and examples that are relevant and concise. I do not muddy waters with fancy language or complicated explanations.

I am drawn to teaching math to high school and college students. I teach middle and high school math - Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry and college math courses (MAT0022C, MAT1033, MAC1105) - as well as prepare high school students for SAT and ACT testing.

My first session with a student is an exploration of the student's likes, dislikes, classroom environment, student's preferred method of learning, and most importantly - goals. The best progress I have seen is that in which I know the student. To teach effectively, one must first understand. I take a personal interest in each of my students.

It is this personal interest and great enthusiasm in seeing my student's succeed that makes me stand out. I cheer when my students understand concepts and can explain material back to me. I have had several students that despised math turn to me and say "I love math!" or "Math makes sense!" This is the highest level of accomplishment I hope to achieve. I high five my students frequently. I use props and movement to explain concepts instead of sitting at a desk working out problems on a paper. Learning is meant to be interactive, and I am not an idle teacher. Sparking an interest and enthusiasm toward math is my ultimate goal. I can help you or your child with virtually any concept in math. I look forward to working together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored in the top 15% of my class when I took the ACT in 2007. Since 2011, I have been preparing junior and senior students for the updated ACT exam. As a student of advanced math, I can concisely cover all math topics on the ACT exam, from pre-algebra to trigonometry. I've successfully increased vocabularies by 50-100 words a week, giving students a competitive edge and thorough understanding of words commonly seen on the ACT test. As a graduate student, I've learned tools and techniques that make dissecting reading passages and analyzing questions quicker and easier.

SAT Math

I've taken both the SAT and ACT exams and scored in the top 10%.
Former students of mine have been accepted to major Florida universities and private liberal arts colleges. I can cover every topic that may be presented on the SAT exam and I will tailor the sessions to you to ensure you achieve the score you need for admission to the college of your choice.

SAT Review

Melody taught me imaginary numbers today and we went over some grammar. She was very patient and helpful and made learning very fun. I have never enjoyed tutoring but today I loved it because Melody made me feel confident in what I was doing.
