About Carla

Educating people is my passion. I am certified, degreed, and have several years experience under my belt. I have two Bachelor Degrees. One is in Marketing Management with a concentration in Human Resources and French. The other is in Education and ESOL (English Speakers of other Languages). I have taught since 1996 in either public school, prep. school, as a Homeschool Instructor, and Private Tutor. As a Private Tutor and Homeschool Instructor, I have tutored partial and/or full length courses to include all academic subject areas, study skills, including Spanish and French.

My teaching style is relaxed yet challenging. I push my students to work to their fullest potential so they can reach their academic and/or self-esteem goals. It is important to me that each person walks away with confidence and absorbs the information so that it can be applied and remembered for future use. My strategies include tailoring to the specific needs of each student and teach them according to how they learn best (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, spatial, or a combination approach.) My goal is to have the student view learning as a lifelong process where they can always be thinking critically and apply their new found knowledge to all situations in daily life and the academic arena.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education in the mid 90's and also added ESOL K-12 (English Speakers of Other Languages),since that time. I have taught in a variety of settings and up to 29 students simultaneously who were all coming from different backgrounds, experiences, and intellects. I had to create customized lesson plans for those either above or below grade level, so tailoring the curriculum and lesson plan is a forte I possess. I continue to take professional development courses and have my Teacher Certification/License renewed until 2012. I have 123 credit hours banked which will be applied to another 5 year renewal until 2017. My current clients are very happy with the results, my patience level, professionalism, punctuality, and ablility to make learning fun.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESOL (Enlish Speakers of Other Languages) since the mid 90's. This student population is my favorite to work with and has always fascinated me. So much so, in fact, I obtained and added ESOL K-12 Certification to my existing Education Degree. There are about 50 ESOL strategies I employ while teaching. After I informally assess and work with the student, I see what their strengths and areas for learning opportunity are and utilize the particular strategies in a combination approach to whatever curriculum they are learning so that they are accommodated, not overwhelmed, and ultimately successful. I followed strict accountability standards while teaching in public school and was regularly monitored and checked both in an observation setting and lesson book collection methods.

Infusing the student's culture into a lesson, always boosts confidence as well. I have also been employed as a regular classroom teacher, a Spanish Teacher, and a French Teacher, as well as being an ESOL Teacher.

Spanish

My knowledge of the Spanish Language is a total fusion of formal coursework as well as independent, and continued professional development. I obtained my (second Bachelor’s Degree), with an Education Bachelor’s Degree 20 years ago and 8 years ago added on my ESOL Certification. English Speakers of Other Languages. I have tutored clients in Spanish and French depending on their situation for enrichment, school requirements, personal leisure, and foreign language home school requirements. I also used to take advanced maintenance courses through First Quality Second Languages. Although, I have formal coursework under my belt, I found a rich, diversity in oral conversations with people from all over the world in Spanish through my former Disney employment as well as in conversing and translating for my students during the school day, coworkers, and parent conferences.

Study Skills

During my time at public school, I obtained certification in a Study Skills Program entitled A.V.I.D.
This program stands for "Advancement Via Individual Determination." What it basically is entails is the embedding of organization, preparation, planning, and "how to" study into whatever curriculum is being taught and it can be employed in any grade, regardless of academic standing. It actually boosts grades, confidence, and self-esteem.

Yoga

I have been an avid Yoga Practitioner for the past 8 years. My focus is on Hatha Yoga, with a specialization in Pregnancy Yoga, as well as a concentration in Kids Yoga. Hatha Yoga is
a form of yogic exercise that emphasizes specific postures in combination with controlled breathing. The practice is a vehicle to heal the united body, mind, and soul. Being in the present moment, being one with self is the intention. Vinyasa is linking movement and breath.

Modifications are important when I teach my clients. I tailor a program to meet the specific needs of each person as to have them progress incrementally, always challenging them, but never making them go to the next level until they are ready. My instruction lasts between one hour and one hour and ten minutes, leaving room for breathing technique coaching as well as a guided meditation session at the conclusion of class. It is important to me to always maintain, even on top of taking classes with professionals in Yoga Studios and teaching my own clients. Therefore, I attend Professional Development Seminars to always keep up with the latest research and best practices. My next venture will be out to Kripalu Center of Yoga and Health, in Massachusetts to attend a weekend long Continuing Education Program where I will be immersed in maintenance classes and will train with Yoga Gurus from all over the States.
