Florida State University (Secondary Science Ed)
My name is Amber, I am a chemistry teacher turned stay at home mom. Even though I have recently left the classroom, I still have a passion for education. I tutor students in middle school through college.
I am a graduate of Florida State University with a BS in Secondary Science Education. I taught Physical Science, Forensic Science, and Chemistry Regular & Honors for 3 years in Raleigh, NC. I then moved to Florida, where I taught Physical Science, Chemistry Honors & Advanced Placement Chemistry for 4 years. During my 7 years in the classroom I have worked with hundreds of students from many diverse backgrounds with varying learning styles. I have a library of resources available for my students, and a wealth of experience tailoring lessons for individual learners.
I have experience with special needs, gifted and ESOL students. Whether you are struggling with the complex science vocabulary, confused by the intense math problems or are finding a disconnect between the classroom and the lab, I can help.
For students in Advanced Placement and college classes I offer small group mentoring in addition to individual tutoring. I can help facilitate your study group and show you how to take it to the next level so that all members benefit from a cooperative effort. This is a great way to receive the tutoring you're seeking, learn how to manage a productive study group and take advantage of a reduced rate. I kid you not when I say I knew absolutely nothing and she taught me an entire semester of chemistry in three days! You will not find a better tutor so stop looking.
When I had to drop Chem 1 and retake it at UF, I knew I needed to find a good tutor, but I found a great one instead! Amber explains things in clear and concise ways. If I didn't understand it the first time, she would use different words or scenarios instead of just repeating herself. She was willing to stay with me as long as she needed to in order to help me understand chemistry. Her positive attitude and friendliness helped me feel comfortable with asking questions. Overall, I feel more comfortable with my abilities in chemistry. I went from 50s to 95s on my exams! I would recommend Amber again and again.
After his first lesson I asked my son to give Amber his grade for her. His response: "A+++++++!!! I didn't really understand what I was doing & why I was lost & now it's like a new window opened up for me...."
We met with Amber to help my son review for his Honors Chemistry finals and she was great! I am an educator but Chemistry is not my strong suit. It was readily evident that Amber is very knowledgeable. She was able to quickly pinpoint my son's areas of weakness so that more time could be spent addressing those areas. Worth every penny! Highly recommend!
My daughter saw Amber for most of her sophomore year, where she was taking IB Chem. Amber was very helpful, available and patient. Ended up pulling a B in the class, which is great for this particular teacher in IB! Thanks Amber!
Communicates well with my son and me. First session Amber seems to have a good rapport with my son. He looks forward to working with her again. Great boost of confidence to have someone review his knowledge and offer important advice to improve grades.
My daughter has had several sessions with Amber B. in the last several weeks. We highly recommend her for Chemistry tutoring. Amber is patient, clear, and very supportive of the student. My daughter has come away from each session with a feeling of confidence in the areas they covered together. My daughter is actually enjoying Chemistry for the first time! Amber B. is also super prompt in her response to emails and at each tutoring session. We highly recommend her for Chemistry tutoring!
My son went from a 50 on his tests to a 101 on his most recent. Thanks so much Amber!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 7 years of classroom experience teaching Chemistry and Physical Science. Hillsborough County rated me as a Highly Effective teacher. In 2014, I was selected as one of three teachers in Tampa Bay area to be recognized with the Lignell Award for excellence in teaching.
