About Dr. Eric

I taught English at the middle and high school levels. I also served as a principal of a high school in Suffield, CT and as principal of a High School in Locust Valley, N.Y. as well as an Assistant Superintendent in a Central School District. Beginning in January, 2015 I have been employed to create chess clubs as part of the after school programs offered by elementary schools. I have created successful chess clubs in four elementary schools.

My EdD is in curriculum and teaching. Besides a solid background in the literature about learning, I have observed hundreds of lessons at the elementary and secondary lessons taught by the spectrum of abilities. I know what excellent lessons look and feel like. The focus always is on clarify of learning where every second counts.

Everyone has special talents and abilities. My greatest one is for establishing moment to moment honest, creative, positive, caring, and respectful relationships with children and young adults. In all learning the relationship created between the teacher/tutor and the student is as important as the content. They are inexorably connected.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I have an Ed D degree in curriculum and teaching from Teachers college at Columbia University which included dimensions of reading instruction. I have taught English at the middle and high school levels and have observed hundreds of lessons, including many excellent reading lessons, as an elementary school assistant principal, middle and high school principal, and assistant superintendent.
