I first started teaching social studies at a special program for inner city high school merit scholars at the University of Chicago. Before that I was a journalist at the Tallahassee Democrat, then later married and moved with my husband to live in Africa. I began teaching social science in Palm beach county and found it very challenging. Finally, I realized my students could not read. So I went back to school and received a master's in reading. This changed everything. I learned the strategies needed to teach low level students, this is the missing link. I did my Masters thesis on reading and math as I believe that reading is needed throughout the curriculum.
Last year I tutored high school FCAT re-takers, many of these students had taken the test up to three times and needed to pass for graduation. All my students passed.
An outstanding tutor is one who can test a student and discover where a student needs help. I tutored an articulate high school senior last year and he was taking the FCAT reading for the fourth time. He was discouraged and despondent. After evaluating him I discovered he needed help not so much in comprehension which he had been receiving, but in vocabulary and word origin.
I am qualified to prepare students for all standardized tests in reading k-12.
