In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach Elem K-5 as I taught from August 1984-September 5, 2014. I had countless hours of Professional Development in the Reading/Writing areas during my 31 years of teaching. My FL teaching certificate did expire on 6/30/15. However I feel I am more than qualified to tutor k-5 students!
I taught Reading to grades 1-3 from Aug 1984-Sept 2014. In 1984 phonics was used as the foundation for teaching reading. I attended several workshops put on by the Elementary Ed Curriculum Dept of the School District of Palm Beach County. Around 1990 the district moved to Whole Language as the teaching methods for Reading. I taught Whole Language supplemented with teaching phonics! As the years moved on I was trained in Balanced Literacy which also included phonics in my daily Reading Instruction!
