About Amanda

As a teacher at John I. Leonard High School, I strive to develop student interest and experience in creative applications of Science and Mathematics in addition to the knowledge required to do well in school. I am certified to teach HS Biology and Chemistry, and MS Math and Science. This year I am teaching AICE Environmental Management and Biology. I have 7 years of experience in the classroom as a teacher, tutor and substitute teacher (K-12). Although I excelled in all subjects throughout my education, Science and Math were always my strongest and favorite.

I attended High School in West Palm Beach, FL as part of a Technology magnet program. Throughout my four years at John I. Leonard, I was active with extracurricular activities such as marching band, National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honors Society) while maintaining straight A's and B's in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. I took a total of nine AP courses from a variety of subjects, including Science, History and English, passing them all with 3's, 4's and 5's. I received the highest score of a 5 on all of the science AP courses I took, which included Biology, Environmental Science and Psychology. Five of my total nine AP courses were taken during my Senior year, during which I also Dual-enrolled at Palm Beach Community College. I received a 1320 on the SAT and graduated from John I. Leonard in 2005.

Beginning in August 2005, I started as an undergraduate at the University of Tampa in the Honors program. I double-majored in Biology and Marine Science, with a minor in Chemistry, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree and cum laude honors in December, 2008. I maintained a GPA of 3.70 while working 15 hours a week. Due to all of the AP courses I took in high school, I was able to graduate an entire semester early. During my time at the University of Tampa, I gained a lot of hands-on experience in the field as a scientist in addition to the knowledge learned in the classroom. I aided my Marine Ecology professor with her research on the population of dwarf seahorses in Tampa Bay on many weekends while school was in session. I also interned in the Aquatics and Herpetology department of the Lowry Park Zoo from February to May, 2007. That same year I volunteered at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center of Juno Beach during the summer, from May to August. There I educated visitors on the biology, ecology and conservation of sea turtles while also aiding in the rehabilitation of rescued animals. In my final year at the University of Tampa, I earned an internship in the Sportfish Health Department at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. From May to August, 2008 I drove to the FWRI everyday to work on a project assessing the health and reproductive patterns of snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. Following the completion of my internship, I gave a presentation at the University of Tampa on the results of my research.

After I graduated from college, I began to pursue a career in teaching. In between taking all of the certification exams, I substituted classrooms of all grades and subjects in Hillsborough County from February, 2009 to June, 2010. The last several months of this time period was spent at a single school: Garland V. Stewart Middle Magnet School. I became a regular substitute teacher there and attended everyday. Additionally, I was hired by the Principal as an ELP Teacher and Math/Science FCAT tutor. A couple days a week I tutored students that were struggling to pass Middle School and were making up Math or Science credits. The rest of the week I either substituted or tutored students that were at risk of not passing the Math or Science FCAT.

As I completed all of my certification exams and earned a Temporary Teaching Certificate, I was hired in August, 2010 at the Orlando Science Schools (Middle-High Charter) to teach Biology and 8th grade Science. I remained as a teacher at this school for a total of three years before moving out of Orlando. After the first year was completed I earned my Professional Teaching Certificate in the high school subjects of Biology and Chemistry as well as all middle grade subjects. My second year at Orlando Science Schools I taught 9th grade Biology, 10th grade Chemistry and 6th grade Science. My final year I taught 8th grade Biology, 9th grade Biology and Advanced Placement Biology. Each year I was also responsible for sponsoring and coaching Math and Science clubs and competitions during after school hours, such as the Science Olympiad, Science Bowl and Energy Whiz. Every year towards FCAT and EOC season I also tutored struggling students in Math and Science on the weekends.

I am confident that with my extensive knowledge and experiences I can help you or your child succeed in school. Please feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to working with you!
