About Will

I am a firm believer that education is a key component to success and happiness in life, and I have been on a mission to inspire my students for almost two decades now. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the idea that all students can learn. It is my job to discover my students' learning style and cultivate a love of learning wherein my students become self-motivated and self-directed learners as they come to recognize how a particular lesson is applicable to their life. It is so vitally important to integrate theory and application.

You may be surprised to learn that a great deal of my success in teaching can be attributed to listening to my students, as opposed to talking at them. Of course I must talk as well, but it is only after listening intently to students that I can discover which part of a lesson they are challenged by. Moreover, only after listening to them can I realize how to connect with them - to see where they are coming from if you will.

A professional, developmentally appropriate relationship must be established and maintained in order for optimal learning to take place. I've seen it time and again in my career, when positive relationships are established students will exceed the expectations of even their biggest advocates. And, unfortunately, if a positive relationship is not established, even the best teacher, best materials, and best curriculum will leave everyone disappointed and end up being a big waste of time, resources, and money.

I am truly blessed to be a professional educator, and I've been told I'm kind-of a rare find. I work with elementary school children in one of the largest public school districts in America, and I am an adjunct professor for a private Christian University. My students range in age from 3 years old to adults and everything in between. In addition to my education and state certification, my work has earned me National Board Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. My wife and I are blessed with two children, both in college and having a blast while they continue their education. When I'm not helping students, you can find me walking along a beach admiring my large collection of seashells I keep scattered there :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am an adjunct college professor and enjoy helping my students succeed in all academic areas. My students have had very good success on college entrance exams and graduate school entrance exams.

ACT Reading

I have been a college professor for over fifteen years and I love to help students prepare for college entrance exams. I am a National Board Certified Teacher (Pre-K through adult). I have limited openings, but I am usually able to accommodate students if their schedule is flexible.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD for almost two decades in one of the largest school districts in America in addition to my private practice. I am a Florida Department of Education Certified School Counselor. I have been trained in crisis management, positive behavior plans, and behavior analysis. I have successfully developed and implemented strategies that help both children and adults learn more effective focusing strategies and coping mechanisms.

Furthermore, I have developed and facilitated workshops (well over a dozen times) that have helped teachers, parents, and family members relate more effectively to those who have ADD/ADHD.

In addition to my experiences listed above, I have a Ph. D. in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.

Aspergers

I work in a public school that has almost 900 students in typical classes in addition to two clusters for special needs students. Many of these students (in typical classrooms and in the clusters) have been identified as having Aspergers. I am well aware that the DSM has made the distinction between Aspergers and Autism and I keep up with the latest research on how best to support people with this issue.

I am a member of the Response to Intervention (RtI) team and I provide input on creating students' Individual Education Plans' (IEP)'s including determining present level of performance and setting goals. Naturally, I also am responsible to help implement the plan.

I hold a Florida Department of Education Certification in School Guidance and Counseling and I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I have been trained in Functional Behavior Assessment and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans in addition to being trained in crisis management. Furthermore, I have a Ph. D. in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.

Career Development

I hold a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, an M.S. in Counseling Psychology, and a B.S. in Organizational Management. I have taught classes at the university level that are perfectly aligned to Career Development. For example, I have taught Career Assessment and Planning, Career and Vocational Counseling, Organizational Leadership, and others.

Additionally, I have conducted workshops in organizations on employee relations, ethical persuasion, solution focused decision making, and various other topics. Moreover, I have coached individual clients on changing careers, effective networking, presentation skills, and the importance of follow-up.

College Counseling

I am a Certified School Counselor which presents me with the opportunity to engage in college counseling on a year round basis.

My career revolves around getting students college (and career) ready. My work has earned me National Board Certification.

Many parents contact me to guide their college bound students when the time comes to choose a college, consider a major, prepare their applications, study for the entrance exams, and coach them on how to succeed at the next level. My clients have reported they have benefited greatly from the critical thinking and decision making lessons I teach Additionally, I have taught strategies for success at the college level.

ESL/ESOL

I am an ESOL contact for one of the largest public school districts in the United States. My students learn quickly and effectively. It has been my experience that students learn best when they are enjoying the lessons and the lessons apply to real world situations.

GED

I am a National Board Certified Teacher with a Ph.D. I am free after 5pm on a limited basis.

GRE

I earned my Ph. D. in 2005 and I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I am a Guidance Director for one of the largest school districts in America and I have been an adjunct college professor for almost two decades. It is a passion of mine to help my students pursue graduate degrees. Few things in life are more satisfying than getting that phone call from a former student telling me he or she completed grad school.

Literature

I am a National Board Certified Teacher and I have a Ph.D. I have almost two decades in the field of education and training and I love teaching literature as well as teaching through literature. My students have made great improvements and tell me that their confidence has increased while their stress has decreased with my support. Please consider allowing me to support you in your educational journey.

Proofreading

I have helped many students get into the university of their choice. The essay is a very important piece to the process and I can help admission counselors take notice. In addition to writing a good essay, it's important to have strong scores on entrance exams and my students are always pleased (and sometimes surprised) with their high scores.

PSAT

I have been involved in academic testing for 19 years. As an adjunct college professor, I know how to prepare high school students for the next level. I prepare students for the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and other exams in multiple ways. First, I prepare them academically - that is getting them ready to be able to answer the questions correctly. Next, I help them with test taking strategies. And I also prepare them emotionally. This includes helping them relax as well as be motivated to embrace the challenge.

Public Speaking

I have written and delivered several dozen speeches in various arenas including: weddings; funerals; sermons; graduation ceremonies; award banquets and others. I have learned much by attending scores of workshops on public speaking (including Toastmaster's meetings) and have also taken several university courses on public speaking.

I am a professional educator who is comfortable in from of the room delivering a planned lesson or impromptu lecture if I'm asked to fill in for someone. Additionally, I teach several university courses including a course on human relations that has a component on public speaking. My students are required to deliver a speech in front of their classmates ~ I coach them and critique them on their efforts.

As a expert in psychology (I have a Ph. D. in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology) I know that one of the biggest (public speaking) obstacles people face is fear. I have used my training and experience to help my clients conquer this fear and become confident speakers that command the room.

Reading

I have worked with students on the Autism Spectrum for well over a decade. Many of my students attend school in self-contained classes and need lots of support. Other students that work with are mainstreamed. Autism (ASD) covers a wide spectrum and interventions must be individualized. Building rapport and positive relationships (with the child and all stakeholders) is key to success.

My approach is to focus on and reinforce the behaviors that are desired for the child to succeed. I ignore or give a non-reactive response to unwanted behaviors. Evidence shows this is the most effective as well as least stressful for the child (not to mention parents/caregivers). If a parent or caregiver desires some coaching on behavior interventions, I can help with that also. In fact this can be extremely beneficial to all involved. The goal is to make progress as quickly and effectively as possible, but not quicker than is feasible. And of course, this is considered on an individual basis.

SAT Reading

I earned my Ph. D. in 2005 and I am a National Board Certified Teacher (Pre-K through adult). I have been an adjunct college professor as well as a Guidance Director for almost two decades ~ in addition to my role as an Educational Coach (Tutor). I help my students get the educational experience they are entitled to.

SAT Writing

I have helped many students prepare for the writing portion of college entrance exams. My students tend to make great progress and do very well on their ACT and SAT. As a college professor of two decades, I have graded literally thousands of college papers and provided feedback to countless students as well.

At this point, I am well aware of what is expected of students on the writing portion of their exams. And I'm happy to provide guidance to help students get accepted into the college of their choice.

Sociology

Like many social sciences, Sociology is a passion of mine. I have studied sociology at the undergraduate level and graduate level. My Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology is very similar to sociology. My college coursework in sociology includes, Sociology, Social Psychology, Human Geography, Basic Social Science, and others. Additionally, I have taught sociology at the college level.
