About Liz

My goal as an educator is to instill a life long love of learning in my students while enabling them to excel in the various subject areas. I worked as a classroom teacher for five years in New York City and two years in West Palm Beach, FL. While I love the energy of a full classroom of students, I witness the most dramatic growth when I have the opportunity to work with students individually. My masters degree (MS) in Early Childhood Special Education has allowed me to realize that every student can benefit from individualized instruction.

How will I help your child succeed?

My method for tutoring begins with getting to know your child's strengths, interests, and areas of need. After an initial meeting, I will focus on curriculum topics that need extra attention as per my assessment as well as any goals the parent/caregiver has for their child. Once we determine our area(s) of focus I will set clear, definable goals so you and your child can track his or her success and build the confidence necessary to move on to the next level. I create lessons that target student goals and build basic skills. Sometimes a little extra help and encouragement is exactly what a student needs to succeed. As a professional tutor I look forward to working with you and your child to help achieve academic goals and reach for the stars!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past two years I have worked as a Special Education Teacher in Palm Beach County. I create specific learning goals for my students who need extra support in both Language Arts and Math. I work one on one or pull small groups to re-teach, review, and/or target learning objectives. I also tutor a small group of 5th graders in math after school.

Elementary Math

This summer I tutored a 2nd grade student in person and via FaceTime to strengthen her math skills. I enjoy helping students determine the most effective strategy for solving math problems.

Painting

During my Senior year in High School I completed a special project where I took college level fine arts courses in painting, drawing and photography. I went on to get my BA in Art History at Columbia University in New York City and took a number of fine arts classes in college as well. For three years I taught a sculpture class to 4 and 5 year olds at a private school in Brooklyn, NY. I worked in the art world in New York for 8 years and have a passion for the arts and for teaching my students how to appreciate art.

Reading

Most of my work as a teacher has been with students on early literacy skills. I determine the current reading level and work with the student to build confidence and skills to get to the next level.

Special Needs

I have my masters degree in early childhood special education from Hunter College. For the past two years I worked as a special education teacher with K-5th Grade students in ELA and Math. I specialize in creating and targeting individual goals for students who demonstrate delays. Every student has their own unique strengths and areas of need and I enjoy working with students to help them get to the next level.

Study Skills

I currently teach Exceptional Student Education (ESE, or Special Education) to students who have IEP's in 1st through 5th grade. A lot of what I focus on has to do with study skills, techniques, and improving organization. Organization is a life skill that is essential for all students to master. I work on developing individual plans to assist my students in their ability to stay organized, focused, and on task.

Swimming

I joined the local swim team when I was 5 years old and swam competitively through grade and high school. I was recruited to swim at Columbia University, a division one swim team. During summer break from college I worked as a swim instructor and during the school year, to raise funds for our training trips, I taught swim lessons to local individuals ranging in age from 5-50 years old.
