About Vanessa

I am an educator, mathematician, and engineer who enjoys teaching people how to do and use mathematics to achieve personal goals in their academic or personal life. My interest in mathematics steered me towards the engineering field so that I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelor of Art degree in Mathematics (both from Florida Atlantic University). I have years of industry experience in the software engineering field and also years of classroom teaching experience in the U.S. public school system, which has provided me the opportunity to teach well over 1,000 students. I consistently get a variety of learners, from those struggling with the material to those who are talented in the subject, to achieve higher grades, pass tests, prevent failure of a course, improve their study skills, strengthen their work ethic, and subsequently increase their self-confidence.

Having taught as a state-certified high school math teacher, I have extensive training in the best effective teaching practices. I developed a track record of high percentages of student performance in meeting or exceeding the proficiency level in state standardized tests (end-of-course exams). Through my software engineering experience, I’ve deeply appreciated how the mathematics taught in school is used to create the products people use in our society. Currently I focus on researching and applying math to software for interactive media (such as computer graphics and puzzle games).

Therefore, I can help by providing instruction that clarifies math concepts while coaching through critical thinking to solve problems and enhancing the instruction through integrating technology (i.e. iPad apps such as the Wolfram Alpha knowledge engine or the Geogebra dynamic geometry software). This is in addition to providing the usual support with review of class material, and reading comprehension and discussion of text, worksheet, or project assignments. I customize the sessions to meet the student’s objectives, which can range from targeted assistance in preparation for exams to lesson-by-lesson coverage of an entire course.

So regardless of whether you are a student (or parent of a student) in middle school, high school, college, or university seeking support with advanced math (algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, or higher), test prep (SAT/ACT and others), or engineering (physics, programming, electrical) subjects, you’ve encountered the right tutor. I offer both in-person and online tutoring sessions. For in-person tutoring, I only meet at public locations such as libraries and cafes within the West Palm Beach area. For availability, check the calendar feed, which shows updates of scheduled time blocks. If you need more information on how I tutor specific subjects, please refer to the subject qualifications section.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Have tutored algebra 1 as a yearlong course to home-schooled students
Currently teaching geometry and precalculus courses at a public high school

Algebra 2

Currently teaching honors-level geometry and precalculus courses in a public high school

Calculus

I have years of experience tutoring students taking calculus in high school, either for AP credit (of which I have 100% pass success rate) or just honors credit, and tutoring students taking calculus at the university. Calculus is often taught in "three different segments", which I have tutored students: Calc I (limits, fundamental rules and applications of derivatives and integrals) similar to AP Calculus AB, IB Math Studies, IB Math standard level courses. Calc II (series and sequences, conics, and vector functions) similar to AP Calculus BC, IB Math higher level courses. Calc III (multivariable calculus) or even a further level (Gamma and beta functions, Fourier series and integrals, the elliptic integral).

I help the student learn by breaking down each step, particularly the algebraic portions, and reviewing/reinforcing to them the many algebra rules and skills they need to recall. As part of my instruction, I explain more in depth how to comprehend the mathematical language, and that is also why I expend effort to show the student how to understand the diagrams that accompany the concepts. Part of obtaining success with calculus is having an understanding of the geometry involved in the concepts. For example, in a tangent line problem, I provide a visual of the curve with a straight line that touches it at a point, and for vector valued functions, I provide a visual of a group of vectors each emanating from the origin and terminating at points along a curve so the student can better understand why vector valued functions have a direction, not just a path.

I provide both online and in-person tutoring services. For in-person sessions, I can arrange to meet at any of the following public library branches (and nearby cafes) in Palm Beach county: Wellington, Greenacres, Lantana Road, Main, Okeechobee Blvd, Royal Palm, West Boca, West Boynton, and Boynton City (library on Seacrest Blvd).

Discrete Math

My qualifications for tutoring this subject include:
1) familiarity with the content from having taken the course at the university as a requirement for my electrical engineering and mathematics degrees,
2) further use of the content to math and programming courses (linear algebra, data structures) for which discrete math served as a prerequisite,
3) and industry experience (software testing/quality assurance) in applying the concepts and techniques in the computer science field.

I can teach the student the concepts, techniques, and applications for all of the main units of the subject, which include:
1) logic and proof
2) Induction and recursion
3) discrete stuctures
4) combinatorics and discrete probability
5) algorithms and their analysis

Geometry

Geometry is one of the subjects I taught every single year that I instructed in the classroom; I've also done extensive professional development in its pedagogy, having attended conferences in the U.S. and internationally.

I help the student learn by discovering the principles, not just merely by providing an explanation. For example, on the transformations lessons, I guide the student through using tracing paper to perform rotations, reflections, etc. and measure the sizes of parts to find a difference or a likeness; then formulate statements from their observations of these patterns. I also integrate demonstrations into my instruction to help the student understand a very visually-oriented subject. For example, in the quadrilaterals lessons, I show the student how to configure and re-configure snap-on rods into shapes determined by certain side/angle criteria so they can understand the quadrilateral definitions and properties.

I provide tailored instruction on one of the most, if not the most, difficult aspect of geometry: proofs; giving the student needed extra support on vocabulary, postulate, and theorem comprehension and retention so they can have greater success with these tasks. I am also familiar with Common Core state standardized tests (end-of-course exams) such as Smarter Balanced and PARCC and can provide the student supplemental support with abundant study resources.

Linear Algebra

As part of my engineering education, I learned and used linear algebra skills in the creation of mathematical models to solve problems and design projects on electrical networks. Although linear algebra has many applications, particularly for computer graphics, the material can seem abstract to students. That's why I also teach the meaning of the concepts in addition to helping the student learn how to do the mathematics.

Physics

I have experience tutoring students in physics, explaining all aspects to solving a problem. I also help the student develop several study skills to achieve success in the course. The student needs to understand the meaning of a formula and learn how to apply the formula, how to read and comprehend the described scenario, how to visualize the geometrical relationships and make an accurate diagram to represent them, and how to keep track of the units in each quantity. So as part of my instructional strategy, I work to break down each piece of understanding and work process, to uncover which issues (conceptual or mathematical) are preventing the student from successfully solving a problem. I tutor all lessons in a standard physics course, from Newtonian mechanics through electromagnetism to nuclear physics.

Precalculus

I have years of experience teaching precalculus in the classroom and also tutoring students taking the course. One of the keys to student success in precalculus is an unrelenting attention to detail, which is an important skill they will need in calculus. I help the student be successful in the course by pointing out where they can avoid common mistakes.

Statistics

I have experience tutoring students in statistics, focusing on the more difficult or confusing topics within the subject. I provide strategies that help the student achieve more success in the course. I adjust my instructional approach according to the student's learning style. I help the student with correctly interpreting the phrasing of the information given in the word problems. I use software to illustrate statistical concepts. Throughout I also teach how probability concepts, via randomness of data, influences the statistical concepts.

Part of what it takes to achieve success is understanding the basic concepts. For example, with a basic concept like population versus sample, a lot of students struggle to understand why they have to deal with sample data. Population data represents every item that exists, and in reality, it can be impossible to get (such as obtaining an opinion from every single resident of a state, which number in the millions) so that is why taking a sample (a much smaller amount compared to the population amount) is so important because it is what is realistically more achievable. However, the manner in which the sample is composed must be done carefully (such as obtaining the opinions from fewer people but from each county in the state, rather than from only one or two counties) since the sample could not represent well the characteristics of the population as a whole.
