About Alexander

My name is Alexander D. I am a jack-of-all-trades entrepreneur, published scholar, technology professional, and learning specialist. What immediately distinguishes me from other tutors is my extensive background in the learning process, and how it can be targeted for improved performance across all subject domains. There are no natural-born geniuses; students who are able to better comprehend, retain, and execute what they've learned with fewer resources, time, and effort merely have acquired these skills earlier in life; I work closely with students to ensure they master these skills, so that whatever they learn they will learn for a lifetime. If learning has ever felt like a chore or a hassle, then look no further! I make learning feel tangible and relevant.

= My Tutoring Philosophy =
Learning is a skill, and, like any skill, it can be refined and improved with proper instruction and guidance.

= My Guarantee =
I will NOT CHARGE you if you are not completely satisfied with my performance. I am WILLING TO NEGOTIATE PRICING based on financial ability, tutoring format, session length & frequency, group tutoring, and other factors. I will provide FREE SUPPORT IN-BETWEEN SESSIONS via email and Skype instant messages.

= My Tutoring Experience =
I have worked closely with students of all ages and abilities over the past several years. Most of my high school and college students who earned a 'C' their first semester ended up earning an 'A' in their second semester and subsequent courses with only two hours of tutoring a week. While volunteering at St. Mary's Children's Hospital, I have worked closely with elementary and middle school students to keep pace with schoolwork while they were confined to the hospital for long-term care. I have experience working with student peers who experience difficulties with esteem, motivation, and/or concentration to make complete and total attitude and behavioral changes. These problems, which are said to occur in the Self-System and/or the Metacognitive System of the Human Psyche, can be targeted and corrected just like any other behavior.

= My Background =
I am a multidisciplinary individual, with a background in computing and education.

I earned my BS in Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. While a student, I served as a teaching assistant and academic tutor, and became a published researcher in the math-savvy field of Computer Vision. Over the past several years, I have worn many hats in the computing industry, where I have worked as a software engineer, a web designer & developer, a triple-certified IT technician, a technical writer & editor, a public speaker, a business consultant, and a technological entrepreneur.

I also have a background in the learning process and knowledge acquisition, where I've spent several years conducting research, innovating new learning methodologies, and developing educational software. I am fluent in The New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, which is a modern revision of Bloom's Taxonomy. I use the New Taxonomy heavily when designing custom syllabi for my students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took Algebra I when I was in 7th grade, and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take higher mathematics courses in college.

Algebra 2

I took Algebra 2 during summer school between 8th and 9th grade and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take Calculus in high school and higher mathematics courses throughout college.

Business

I earned an 'A' in Technological Entrepreneurship course at the University of Central Florida. I am currently involved in three different start-ups, so I have intimate experience with finances, legalities, publications, fundraising, etc.

C

I have been programming in C for more than 10 years. I am a professional software developer, with a large arsenal of technologies and skills under my belt.

C++

I am fluent in C++11, which is currently the latest version of the language implemented widespread in the industry. I've learned the more intimate details of the language from the standards specification directly. My programming experience has utilized just about every facet of the language. I am well aware of the subtle but very important differences between C++11 and older versions of the language. I also make sure to teach students the difference between coding in C vs coding in C++: just because C is a subset of C++ doesn't mean that it should be used under most circumstances.

Calculus

I first took AP Calculus in the 10th grade, and passed with flying colors. I later when on to take Calculus II and other higher mathematics courses in college, and aced them as well.

Computer Engineering

I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida. I earned an 'A' in Computer Organization and Computer Architecture, which involves the construction of digital circuits. I have experience tutoring these courses.

Computer Programming

I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida. I have been programming for more than 10 years. I have a wide arsenal of programming skills and technologies.

Computer Science

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida. Received 'A' in all Computer Science courses (both theory and practice), including Computer Science II Honors. Been tutoring computer science for many years (data structures, algorithms, computational and complexity, OOP, AOP, functional programming, theory of programming languages, etc). Also partook in a 4-year Computer Science program in high school, so I am very familiar with the expectations of computer science courses at the high school level.

Discrete Math

I have used discrete mathematics extensively in my career as a professional software developer - it's hard to come by a data structure or algorithm that doesn't leverage discrete mathematics to some degree. As a published researcher in the math-savvy field of computer visions, I found discrete mathematics to be the heart of the algorithms I was developed to detect and identify businesses in images. I am fluent in numerous topics embodied by discrete mathematics, including but not limited to logic, set theory, probability, combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, and matrix algebra. I also have experience tutoring introductory discrete mathematics and other more specialized discrete mathematics courses.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary students of all ages and abilities in all subject areas (math, science, art, music, computers, geography, anatomy, etc.) for several years. Of particular note is my experience as a full time volunteer at a nearby Children's Hospital in which I devoted part of my time to tutoring students behind in their classes. Students I've worked with become proficient by making the designated subject areas feel tangible, relevant, and interesting. Students that I've worked with in developing intuition and appreciation for learning has holistically improved academic performance across all subject areas. I also teach students study skills to help them achieve better comprehension, retention, and application of what they've learned.

Elementary Math

Students enjoy and appreciate my explanations and illustrations, and feel inspired to do better. I am well acquainted with Common Core and ensure students satisfy their grade-level objectives.

Finite Math

Finite Mathematics combines many topics from both continuous and discrete mathematics. I have a strong foundation both continuous and discrete mathematics, developed in pursuit of my BS Computer Science and honed in every day use. I help make these topics relevant and approachable to non-math majors, such as focusing on financial applications for business students.

Geometry

I took Geometry in 8th grade, and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take Calculus in high school and higher mathematics courses throughout college.

Java

I've been programming and tutoring in Java since 2004. I've used it extensively throughout college and in my career.

Linux

I am an experienced IT Professional. I am CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+ certified. I have worked with and developed software on various Linux distributions.

Logic

I have a degree in Computer Science, which is all about the logic of analyzing problems and designing solutions to those problems. I can teach students to apply logic in solving word problems, approaching computations, and finding optimal solutions. I can teach the proper study of logic and their applications to fields such as Set Theory and Enumerative Combinatorics.

Microsoft Windows

I am fluent in Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8. I have employed Windows for purposeful use and in business environments, including technical assistance and administration in Enterprise settings.

Networking (Computer)

I am a Network+ Certified IT Technician. I have extensive experience setting up, configuring, and securing networks in home and small office settings. I also have experience configuring firewalls to limit access of essential protocols to prevent unauthorized access while ensuring applications work as intended. I also know how to diagnose network-related problems and determine if the issue is local or with the Internet Service Provider.

Prealgebra

I took Prealgebra in 6th grade, and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take Calculus in high school and higher mathematics courses throughout college.

Precalculus

I took Precalculus in 9th grade, and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take Calculus in high school and higher mathematics courses throughout college.

Study Skills

I have spent the past several years studying the learning process, and study skills that best accommodate the learning process. Skills I employ include but are not limited to: mnemonics, mind mapping, speed reading, note taking, note making, time management, concept graphing, etc. I am fluent in employing The New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, and use it to both identify learning deficiencies in addition to optimizing the acquisition of knowledge by identifying designated learning objectives. (I am also developing educational software to facilitate the application of The New Taxonomy towards creating an independent learning syllabus.) I have tutored students of all ages how to become a better learner, thus improving their performance on a holistic basis across multiple subject areas.

Trigonometry

I took Trigonometry in 9th grade, and passed it with flying colors. Why wouldn't I? It was my favorite subject! I've since gone on to take Calculus in high school and higher mathematics courses throughout college.

UNIX

I help students understand the thousands of incarnations of Unix (and Linux) and what they all have in common. I explain to them the standards that they implement and how interoperability is achieved with different versions of similar software. I help them identify suitable distributions for them to use and help them better understand their distribution of choice. I help them understand the difference between "plain vanilla" software and configurations vs highly customized distribution-specific versions, and when to use one over the other. I help them understand package management and dependency resolution and how to manually install software for which no package exists.

Web Design

I have been doing professional web design and development for several years. I have employed technologies including but not limited to (X)HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, JSP, Apache httpd, Apache Tomcat, Wordpress, and Mediawiki.

World History

I help break History down into two parts: recall and relationships. There is an immense amount of information that must be memorized, and I teach students strategies for memorizing them effectively. Once the details are memorized, I help students understand the relationships between them: causes and effects, time sequences, reasons why certain events occurs, and analyzing the consequences of those events. I also help students identify which details are more important than others in relation to the thematic questions that must be understood and responded to.

Writing

I have expensive experience writing, editing, and designing technical/non-fiction documents and publications. I also have a knack for creative writing, especially short stories and poems.
