About Howard

I am a Mac (Apple) based professional designer. If you have a PC, please ask for another tutor.

In my professional career I have instructed fellow colleagues and employees in all areas of design and production. Many have gone on to become successful art directors. In the areas of design, painting, and photography, I am confident I can help anyone maximize their own personal talent by showing them how to proceed in the right direction.

I am quite knowledgeable in the use of these software programs: Quark, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I am only interested in teaching beginners how to properly use these programs successfully. Today, these programs have become quite involved, giving the user numerous options and versatility. To become proficient, you have to learn the basics.

For 22 years I have worked on Macs. Before software courses existed, all of us new to computers had to learn on our own through books, conversations, and trial and error. I understand how Macs work and how to use them to maximize results. As an owner of a small business, I have a diverse knowledge-base that goes beyond software and computers, and will share that knowledge with any of my students. I am a patient teacher and a problem solver, who better to be your personal instructor?

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

Using my knowledge (20 years) of Quark and other Adobe products, I learned InDesign 5 years ago to complete a book project. Since then I have worked on over 100 projects using InDesign from designing logos to ads and books (design and paging). For large paging projects, I use xtags in Word then bring the files into InDesign for paging. Six years ago I was invited to a focus group in New York to help determine the future of Adobe products. I am perfect for the beginner student who wants to learn InDesign. InDesign provides extensive potential, but if you don't learn the basics first such as type, formats, style sheets, master pages, and the proper way to export PDFs, you may create a problem unknowingly for your client.

Desktop Publishing

Whether you use Word, Quark, InDesign or another product to produce books, newsletters, magazines for print or Web, you have to know the basics of book design. I have over 35 years experience designing books and all types of print collateral. From elementary to college texts, children's books, reference, biographies, trade, I know everything there is to know about publishing and will help anyone produce a quality product. Companies I have worked for include: McGraw Hill, Prentice Hall, Wiley, Springer, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, American Bible Society to name a few.

Macintosh

I have been a Mac user since 1990. I have lived through all the OS upgrades and understand the basics of how Macs work. I am not a techie, but I know how to maintain a computer, when to upgrade and when to purchase a new one. Setting up your System and Finder Preferences is key and knowing where your files are downloading to will avoid cluttering up your cpu with duplicate files. Keeping items off your desktop will help to reduce files becoming corrupted. You can use the Time Machine for back up or copy your files to an external hard drive. And today, those some external hard drives can be Wi-Fi activated to log into an iCloud account and become accessible anywhere in the world you have connect-ability.

Photography

At the beginning of my career, I juggled being a photographer and a graphic designer. I have developed color and bl/wh photos, set up darkrooms, designed setups and photographed them or art directed them for the client. Photography is a combination of composition, color, and knowing what you or the client is looking for. Using my painting skill of seeing light and color, I have helped other photographers hone their skills. Today's digital photography doesn't produce the quality photos of film, but it can be much more fun. I understand RBG as opposed to CMYK and I can help any student bring out their best, plus understand the process of today's digital photography.
