I can help you work with words. I'm a professional writer and editor who has also worked as an adjunct professor at Palm Beach State College and at FAU's Honors College in Jupiter. I've managed to teach students of many ages and ethnic backgrounds how to communicate effectively in academic English, how to compose meaningful stories and how to organize their ideas into coherent, persuasive prose. Along the way, I've managed to sell a few songs and work on a few locally produced films, as well as do some video and audio production work at the professional level.
As an instructor, I believe strongly in learning by doing - there's a burgeoning industry of "how-to-write" books and workshops that ignore the fundamental truth as enunciated by Ernest Hemingway: "If you want to be a writer, WRITE." In that regard, I think I'm more like a shop teacher than a science lecturer. I can't pour information about "the laws of literature" into a student's head; I can only point out ways to craft your words into sturdier structures. Practice smarter. Make the next thing you write better. I can help you work with words. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been reading the Bible as literature, history, culture and spiritual guide for decades now. Though raised a Catholic - and a graduate of Cardinal Newman's religious curriculum - I'm also an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church.
I've participated in quite a few online Bible studies with a very diverse crowd of readers. Reverence (and thinking you know what you're about to read) often takes a back seat to discovery (and being absolutely surprised by what you're actually reading).
Some of my online excursions into Scripture include the discussions of Ecclesiastes and Job, Genesis and John, and Reading Isaiah notes.
I'm a professional writer and editor, with work published in national and international newspapers, magazines, and literary journals. I'm also an adjunct professor of English, specializing in composition - which means academic writing and creative writing. Words are my vocation.
Some of my credits should give an idea of my experience in independent film production, including everything from boom operator to composer to co-writer, producer and co-director.
I also made film theory/film history a special subject of study in graduate school, and have a certification in film production from Palm Beach Community College (now, Palm Beach State).
I've been a publishing professional for two decades, with much of that time spent producing a nationally distributed weekly magazine. Part of that process involved learning how to check copy carefully, accurately, and on a very firm deadline. Written communication can be an exacting art, but it's not as hard to get the hang of reading critically as you might think - that is, once you've got some time-tested newsroom techniques at your disposal.
I am qualified to teach public speaking because in two different branches of my professional life, I'm called on to speak in public clearly, cogently, and with emotional impact. As a professor, I address lectures to and lead discussions of groups of students, providing instruction in the fundamentals of good rhetoric. As a wedding officiant, I help happy couples and their communities celebrate one of the most important days of their lives together with unique, written-to-order ceremonies. Speaking in public is, to me, an extension of writing: a way of using language to communicate ideas.
I'm a professional editor, writer and adjunct professor of composition with more than a decade of experience in guiding students and readers to a new appreciation of the written word. Early in my career, I worked as a tutor for a test prep service that gave me some valuable insights into how standardized tests are scored - and ways test-takers can give themselves an edge. By focusing on a few guidelines, it's possible to boost your score significantly.
Years ago, I had an album put out by The Unlike record label in Ohio.
Since then, I've composed several film scores for independent directors locally in Florida, as well as in England and Australia.
I've also done some ad work for the Green Advertising agency in Boca Raton. (A TV spot for Broward General Hospital.)
I've been in quite a few local bands and have set a project for writing a song a month about a recent scientific discovery at the Guild of Scientific Troubadours.
In general, I like simple melodies and complicated words.
I've been a professional writer since earning my M.A. in English in 1993. My work has appeared in publications as varied as Der Spiegel, the London Sunday Mirror, 43Folders and the Australian poetry journal Cordite. From 1997 to 2012, I worked as reporter, senior writer and associate managing editor for Sun magazine; since then, I've been managing editor for a number of travel magazines at the PPI Group.
