About Kay

Teaching English to speakers of other languages has been my passion for many years. There are many reasons people want and need to learn a language: to communicate socially, to do well in school subjects taught in English, to read signs, posters, newspapers, magazines and books, and to be a part of their English-speaking environment. The English skills they need include listening, speaking, reading and writing; usually learned in that order. I have taught adults in college, teenagers in high school: many who had little or no literacy in their first language, and refugees in a refugee camp in Indonesia. As a teacher in a group setting, I usually act as facilitator: setting up the lesson, modeling it and having the students work in small groups. As a tutor, I encourage the student to express the issues they are having trouble with.

Although I have used textbooks and other prepared materials, I enjoy adapting them or creating similar "lessons" that are more interesting to my students. I like to connect the learning of subject matter to the needs and interests of my students.
The learning then becomes alive and more meaningful to them. Consequently I have noticed that they learn more quickly and remember better. Since moving to Florida last year, I have been looking for an opportunity to work with students who need to learn English.

My qualifications include my TESOL education (Masters in Education in TESOL from Teachers College) and broad range of experience teaching: SAT reading, TOEFL, and pubic speaking . I have also participated in curriculum development and given quite a few presentations at International TESOL conventions. I am a good listener and usually understand what the student wants and needs. My task is to provide for those needs in a creative way.

Although TESOL is my major area, I have also taught reading for SAT exams, teacher entrance essay preparation, GED reading and research paper writing, sometimes combined with a Power Point presentation of the research material.

If you are interested in any aspect of English language learning, I would encourage you to contact me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have an M. ED. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. From 1981 to 1983 I worked in Pulau Galang Refugee Camp, Indonesia where I did teacher training and ESOL curriculum development for Vietnamese and Khmer refugees. From 1984 through 2000 I taught high school students from many countries; all of whom had little or no literacy in their first language and very little formal schooling.
Since 1995 I also taught advanced ESOL at Capital Community College. I did this until the end of 2013 when I moved from Hartford, Connecticut to Venice, Florida.
