About Michelle

My teaching career began with fifth grade students when I taught the "Too Good for Drugs" program in the elementary schools in DeSoto County, Florida. While participating in the program, each student shared stories and asked questions as they learned about drugs and the dangers of drug use. After serving as an adjunct faculty member at University of Phoenix in the classroom for four years, I learned how to relate to students one-on-one and as a group. Each student is unique and it is the student's individuality in terms of skills, motivation, life experience, and ability that makes the tutoring experience a creative opportunity for both student and tutor. In my opinion, tutoring involves exploring a student's strengths and building on them. Each accomplishment reinforces another and helps a student to develop a "can do" approach to learning. My career as a therapist and grief counselor has included public speaking to both small and large groups and provided many opportunities to communicate and educate the community. Public speaking can be challenging and rewarding as well. History, in particular American History, is a favorite subject because I was taught by teachers who truly loved their subjects. It is this same philosophy I carry forward as a tutor. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
