As a teacher in public school, I was always given the students who struggled to learn. I am a successful teacher of children K-5 as well as adults who wanted to learn to read more efficiently. Every lesson is individualized to the needs of the student with an emphasis in helping the student become an independent learner.
I am a very organized individual who loves to see joy come to the face of the student when the student "gets it!" It is important for every parent to realize that learning takes time. There are no quick fixes, but the way I teach students enables them to learn how to learn and then to apply those skills throughout all of their courses.
Teaching math to students who can't understand numbers and the number relationships is something I also do very well. I teach math through a thinking approach to math. This approach shows the student how to work word problems and how to calculate with ease. Tears and defiance will leave as confidence comes in.
Finally, many students "hate" school because they are totally overwhelmed by what is asked of them every day. I not only teach the students how to get things done, but I will always explain to the parents what they may do to continue the learning process and to make things easier at home. Studying is a joy when you know how to study. Both parents and students will learn the basics of studying with the individual student's strengths and weaknesses in mind.
My certification as a Reading Specialist means that I attended many classes to learn not only how to teach reading, but more importantly, how the mind reads and retains information. I have taught many non-readers how to read and understand what they have read.
My Master's degree is in Special Education--Learning and Reading Disorders. I have taught children with learning disabilities, Autism and other impairments all of my career. I also became a Nationally Board Certified teacher of Special Education to show that I was in the very top percentage of teachers across the United States. Becoming Nationally Certified is a difficult task which requires many components of teaching and taking tests to show that one is truly eligible for this high honor. I am pleased to say I achieved the National Board Certification in 2006.
For twenty years I founded and administrated my private school in Pennsylvania where we taught students of all ages how to learn. I developed curriculum and earned trademarks on our methods. Although I no longer am affiliated with the school, the procedures used there are still valid and available to be taught to any student in need of those skills.
I look forward to answering questions on the phone or via email concerning the specific needs for your child. I am honest and skilled. It would be an honor to get to know and work with your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I founded and administrated my own licensed private school in Pennsylvania for 20 years. There I developed a curriculum for teaching study skills, thinking skills and organizational skills.
