About Michael

I tutored student-athletes in whatever courses they happened to be taking in the humanities or the social sciences. I also do Test-Prep. It helps that one of my degrees qualified me to work for the companies that build those tests. Before retiring this term, I taught Rhetoric & Composition I and II every term for two decades and taught every undergraduate literature course offered at least a few times. But, my favorite course was creative writing. I have also helped many people of all ages learn English as a second language. I teach ESL over Skype to students all over the world. Sometimes this is via conversation, and other times I teach grammar, or help my students prepare for English proficiency exams they must pass to get into a particular school or land a particular job.

I hold:
an Ed.D. in Educational Psychology
an M.A. in English & Creative Writing
an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology/ESL)
an M.S.Ed. in Instructional Technology
a B.A. in Philosophy
I have additional graduate hours in:
Economics = 15
Art = 9
Sociology = 9
Political Science = 6
Clinical Sexology = 9

I now teach exclusively online, though I do volunteer-tutor students at the local library.

Over the years, my preference has always been for working one-on-one with students who have trouble with the subject. I am very student-centered and adjust my teaching style to the learning style of the student. If instruction is delivered in ways sensitive to the special needs, problems and interests of a student, that student both learns more and enjoys the learning process more.

My strength as a teacher has always been an ability to find ways to help those students who seek tutoring out of fear of struggling with the material and doing badly on the test to surprise themselves by enjoying the process of learning the material and doing really well on the test. I am at ease if a student occasionally needs their teacher to be a life-coach or therapist. In the parlance of education, this means that I am developmentally oriented rather than subject matter focused. This does not mean that I do not know the subject matter that I am teaching well or care how well the student learns it. It does mean that I respect each student as a unique individual and try to tailor how I teach whatever subject I am teaching to best serve the real person I am working with on that particular occasion.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I was a teacher at the college level before retiring recently. I taught mostly online for the later part of my career and only tutor online here. I have taught many classes in developmental reading and writing over that time as well as countless sections of freshman English I also have extensive experience working as a literacy skills tutor (writing, reading, study skills) with students of every age. Because my doctorate is in Educational Psychology, I have an advantage tutoring ACT English. That degree qualified me to design objective tests like the ACT after graduation. Knowing how the test is built and scored is of great assistance to me as I help students maximize their scores; I can teach test-taking skills along with English. An ACT score measures how much a student knows about English grammar and usage. But, it also measures skill in taking tests like the ACT.

English

I have a masters' degree in English and have taught it online for over 10 years.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught the full range of English courses offered at the college level. This December, I will be awarded an MAIS (Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies) in Psychology and ESL. I am now a full-time distance educator with extensive experience tutoring ESL\ESOL across the full package of literacy skills. If you need help with Grammar, pronunciation, essay writing or any other English language literacy skill, I can help you

European History

The history of Europe from the time of the Greeks and the Romans up until the present day has been a source of endless fascination and constant study for me for many years. The topic is so broad that I will have to ask you to give me some idea of what you need to know and why so that I can refresh my memory before trying to teach what I once knew on any narrow topic. I may have to go back and relearn the details. With that limitation, I can help you on anything from Greek philosophers to the rise and fall of the Roman empire to why Great Britain recently voted to leave the EU (European Union).

Literature

I have taught literature at the college level for thirty two years. I hold an M.S.Ed in Distance Education in addition to my MA in English and have been a full-time distance educator since 1997.

Philosophy

I love philosophy. I majored in philosophy as an undergraduate and, looking back, consider this the best decision I ever made. I was constantly asked what I was going to do with a philosophy degree. What I did with my philosophy degree was to do well in graduate school in seven different subjects (psychology, economics, statistics, literature, creative writing, TESOL and Instructional Technology) without working nearly as hard as most of the other people in my classes. My philosophy degree taught me how to read critically, think clearly and ask the really important questions about whatever I had decided that I wanted to learn how to do next. Some people think of me as being really gifted. If so, I was not born with this gift but received it from O.C. Weaver and Paul Franke, the two professors who taught me to see things like a philosopher. Seeing it like a philosopher is the only way to really understand anything fully enough to put what you know to good use. This makes a philosophy degree the most practical degree to earn and my favorite subject to tutor even though I have never even tried to get hired as a philosophy professor.

Psychology

I have taught a wide range of psychology courses at the college level for many years. My doctorate is in Educational Psychology, the study of how people best learn and of how to help students learn best given the characteristics of each student as an individual learner. I know the subject matter and I also know how to modify my teaching style to best fit your learning style. Study skills and test taking skills are also important. I can help you with both.

Reading

I have extensive training and experience teaching students of every age and level to read or to read better. Reading truly is fundamental to academic success at every level. I learned to love reading very young and believe, looking back, that this made all the difference in making a life possible for me that was richer and more rewarding than what my life should have been given my cultural background. I came from a home where there were no books and attended public schools which did not prepare even students who made good grades there to do well in college or take joy in participating in the life of the mind. Whenever I have the opportunity to teach reading, I feel that I am paying forward the lucky break that made my own very surprising life possible. Her name was Lucille Ingram and I will never forget her.

SAT Writing

I am a writing teacher with extensive experience in test preparation. I have the coursework taken by people who go on to work for testing companies like the one that builds the SAT. This helps more than you might imagine in working with students preparing to take those tests. I really enjoy tutoring writing for test-prep and have the perfect academic background for the task even though I thought that I was preparing to do something completely different as I acquired that background. However, due to a physical handicap, I can only work online. I sometimes think that fate intervened to make me into the full-time distance educator that I would have wanted to be all along if I could have foreseen how satisfying a career this would turn out to be.

TOEFL

I have extensive online experience tutoring English conversation students. I have also taught the full range of English and Developmental English offered at the community college level for many years. In addition, I hold one of the degrees that would qualify me to help write standardized tests such as the TOEFL; I can teach you test-taking skills that would be very valuable. This December, I will be awarded an MAIS (Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies) in Psychology and ESL.

Writing

I teach the full range of writing and developmental writing classes taught at the post-secondary level. I also have extensive experience tutoring in writing labs. I have worked with the full range of students from adult learners to elementary school students. I am now a full-time distance educator. I think that you might enjoy working with me.
