About Briana

Hi everyone! I'm a recent undergraduate of Duke University and I've moved back home to Tampa to spend my gap year. At Duke, I majored in Biology, minored in Art History, and I'm currently pursuing the medical profession, but I have a rooted interest in English and Literature as well.

Helping kids realize that they actually are capable of grasping course material has been a sustained interest for me since high school and is something I always try to make time to do. I have experience tutoring all age groups through the college level, but most of my formal experience is with elementary school students. I volunteered much of my time last year to TA within the Durham Public School system through the America Reads/America Counts program.

Growing up with three younger siblings means I'm a jack-of-all trades when it comes to tutoring different subjects, it also helped me to realize that you cannot rely on the same approach with every tutee-- every student receives information differently. So I look forward to getting to know my tutees and helping them reach their potentials

I earned a BS in Biology from Duke University.

Invested interest; Literature classes in college to fill elective credits: Shakespeare after 1600, Masculinity in Literature, Don Quixote as a 21st Century Novel; Completion of AP Literature and AP Language in High School.

I understand what turns students off of literature and through focused discussion can help them realize the relevance and usefulness of this subject

I have 1+ year of experience teaching/tutoring elementary students in Durham, NC (K, 1st, 4th, and 5th) ; 1 year experience mentoring elementary students in Tampa, FL (4th and 5th).

Minor in Art History from Duke University; AP Art History in High School.

Don't ever hesitate to reach me for questions about material and scheduling. I'm flexible and understanding with schedules and time conflicts, just let me know beforehand.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Most pertinent is the year I spent with America Reads/America Counts as a tutor in Durham NC, there I worked with grade school kids in math and reading. I spent three hours a week at an after school program for 4th graders, in a kindergarten class, and in a first grade class as a TA. I led lessons on number of occasions and even administered tests. I am an engaging tutor, I have a solid understanding of elementary school kids, and get along well with them. Previously, I tutored 2nd graders once a week for a semester, privately tutored a 5th grader for her science fair, and provided mentorship to 3rd graders, among other experiences.
