About Alayne

Hello! Thank you for looking at my profile.

I have taught 6 year olds through 60 year olds, from elementary to undergraduate to medical students to physicians and professionals.

I am a very outgoing person with a PhD in social science. Besides teaching, I conduct research, write articles and books and am always interested in learning new things. In fact, I always learn a lot from my students, which is one of the reasons why I enjoy teaching so much.

My specialty is helping coach and tutor students through tough subjects. I started tutoring in elementary when my teachers assigned me to teach others to read. Since that age, I knew that I feel good helping others. As an exchange student I learned Spanish despite living in Barcelona Spain with a family that actually spoke Catalan to me! After a while, with help of my professor at the University, we were able to figure out why I was confusing words. So I understand it is NOT your fault if you don't "get it" the first time. Today, I speak and teach Spanish and/or in Spanish. My specialty areas are varied as I have taught many subjects, including literature (English, Spanish, classics), writing, labor studies, gender studies, social sciences, Spanish, English, ESL/ESOL, statistics, math and general studies. I specialize in Medical and Health translations.

My view of how to best assist students comes from a method I learned called Strategic Tutoring, which allows me to help you get organized, learn study skills, and how to analyze and remember vocabulary and/or equations.

I am a versatile tutor in either English or Spanish. I enjoy teaching Spanish and helping Spanish speakers learn English.

Feel free to contact me to schedule lessons. I am pretty flexible and willing to assist you to become the best student ever! Si se puede = yes, you can!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a Masters and a PhD in Anthropology. My specialization is Medical Anthropology; however I also have an MA in Urban Anthropology/Studies. I have taught at the University level and helped tutor my peers. In tutoring, I think it is important to meet the student where he/she is and have them tell me where they are, what their struggle might be and what they think they need. Most anthro students have problems with study habits because it is a lot to remember, physical and biological anthropology and sometimes, methods and/or statistics. One of my favorite parts of anthropology is research design.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English in Spain and Mexico to many many people. I work at a community organization and understand how hard English can be to master. But it's not impossible and I am sure I can help you!

Public Speaking

I have many years of experience as a public speaker. For what it is worth, I have been endorsed for this on Linked In by many people. Additionally, I have presented hundreds of times at professional conferences, defended my thesis and dissertation and regularly speak publicly, teach and make community presentations.

Reading

In terms of reading, my first tutoring assignment was probably my little brother who is five years younger than me. My love of writing comes from my love of reading. I believe that once a student realizes the power of reading, it changes their world.

Spanish

I love teaching Spanish! I have done it for many years at the university level and through a few community programs.

Writing

I have many years of experience tutoring in all areas, particularly in writing and expression. In English and Spanish.

Experienced, knowledgable, professional and effective

Alayne and I coordinated the lesson date/time. She was flexible which really helped. Her experience in the field of presenting/public speaking appeared evident and made me comfortable. She inquired about my experience level and my goals. We quickly created an outline and listed components to help me achieve objectives. Her friendliness and energy will create a fun learning environment.
