About Jessica

I am a recent graduate from the University of South Florida. I have been a tutor at the University of South Florida for the past year. I tutor athletes in various subjects. My favorite subject to tutor/teach is American Sign Language. I really enjoy working with others and helping them better themselves in school or in life. I have also been an aide in five kindergarten classrooms, so I have experience working with children. The feeling you get when someone finally understands something you are teaching them is amazing, and I truly enjoy helping others.

I have been the most requested tutor at my job because the students love working with me. At one point in time I thought I wanted to be a teacher, but I realized that I prefer working with people one on one. I am better at working with students individually so that I can place all of my focus on them. I have realized that the students appreciate it more and it is much easier for me that way. This is why I enjoy and I'm good at being a tutor.

When working with a student I focus on their strengths and use them to improve their weaknesses. I figure out how the student learns best, and use that to tutor them in a way that best fits their needs.

Math was my favorite subject in high school, and I have noticed that I can usually think of another way to explain certain concepts. If a student isn't understanding the concept I can help them think about it in another way.

One of my majors in college was Sign Language Interpreting. I have also been tutoring Sign Language for the past year.

I am qualified to work with students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing because I do know sign language. I went to school for sign language and have been studying it for four years.

I enjoy working with students of all ages because learning is important at all stages of life. I believe that it is important for someone to master topics before moving on to the next level or grade. Making a difference in the lives of others is my goal.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hard Of Hearing

I have a Bachelors Degree in Sign Language Interpreting from the University of South Florida. I have a deaf roommate, and I communicate well with deaf/hard-of-hearing people. I am proficient in Sign Language.

Sign Language

I have a Bachelors Degree in Sign Language Interpreting from the University of South Florida. I have been tutoring Sign Language for the past year and my students have been successful. I know what is considered to be the basic vocabulary and I own books to help teach/tutor it. I am proficient in Sign Language far beyond the basics, so I could tutor all levels of Sign Language courses.
