About Mary Jo

I've been a university-level English language tutor for the last four years, and I've loved every minute of it. My students have all been engaged and committed to the process of learning English, a language that isn't all that easy. I know English inside and out; I've been both a journalist and a fiction writer. I also have had professional voice training. In short, I know the ins-and-outs of the sound of English, its rhythm, its stress patterns, its musicality, and most importantly how your first language may influence your English pronunciation.

Due to my family background, I have been around languages other than English all my life. I have basic fluency in both French and Spanish, so I know firsthand the anxieties and worries we have when learning a new language. I prefer to work with college students and other adults. I work hard with all my students to make them comfortable as they work on their pronunciation. Unless you started learning English when you were very, very young, you're not likely to ever completely sound like a native speaker. However, together, we can work to improve key features of the language and improve your speaking sound.

I received an MA in applied linguistics this year from the University of South Florida. I have tutored international students from many countries, particularly from Asia and the Middle East in all aspects of English for the last four years at USF and have also taught reading and writing to entry level international students. Pronunciation is my passion. i believe I have an excellent ear for what students need to improve in their speech. By the way, I hold two other degrees, a Masters in Fine Arts in fiction writing, also from the University of South Florida, and a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in political science from Barnard College.

Please contact me so we can discuss what help with your pronunciation you think you need, and we will arrange how to meet and begin our work together. We'll start with a discussion of your first language(s), your English proficiency, what you would like to work on. After that discussion, and my analysis, we will put together a plan on how to proceed. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have made my living through the English language all my life. I am a university level writing teacher, a fiction writer, and a former journalist and am trained to work with non-native as well as native English speakers. I hold two related master's degrees in the field, a Master of Fine Arts in fiction writing and a Master of Arts in applied linguistics. I know I can help you improve your language and communication skills.

ESL/ESOL

I received my master's degree at the University of South Florida. As part of my studies, I spent four years tutoring international students, both undergraduate and graduate, in all aspects of English, including speaking and pronunciation. This means I know what difficulties students have with spoken English, depending on their first language.

I also am a professional writer, in both fiction and non fiction.

Grammar

I have used the English language to earn a living for many years--as a newspaper columnist and reporter, a short story writer, a university writing teacher, and English language tutor for non-native speakers. I even know how to diagram sentences the old-fashioned way! English grammar is not easy, but I know how to fix the tiny details that can trip you up as well as help you see the big picture. My academic training says it all: I hold a BA in political science, an MFA in fiction writing, and an MA in applied linguistics. I prefer to work with adults.

Political Science

I hold a BA, with honors, in political science from Barnard College. Further, as a veteran journalist, in print, broadcast, and online, I have seen up close and in detail how the political process, particularly in the U.S. context, works and doesn't works. I am knowledgeable about politics and urban affairs, racial issues as they affect politics, and the relationships between reporters and newsmakers that affect the way politicians are seen and succeed--or don't.

Proofreading

Because I have been a professional writer in one setting or another all my life, I have had to become an absolute expert at proof reading, so I would produce error-free copy. I can teach you to do the same. I am a university level teacher, a fiction writer, and a linguist with experience teaching non-native English speakers. I have also been a journalist, in print, broadcast and online. And I have certainly written my share of university papers, in both undergraduate and graduate school. I'm glad to work with you, whatever your needs.

TOEFL

I hold an MA in applied linguistics, the field of teaching English as a second language, and have several years experience tutoring university-level international students in all levels and circumstances in which they use English. I am also an English pronunciation tutor through Wyzant. Good pronunciation is certainly necessary to do well on TOEFL. I look forward to working with you.

Writing

I have spent my life as a professional writer, in both fiction and non-fiction, and as a teacher, for both native and non-native speaking students. I am particularly interested in working with university students and other adults. I hold an MFA in fiction writing and an MA in applied linguistics, am a published short-story writer and a veteran journalist, in print, broadcast and online. I look forward to working with you.
