About Rebecca

I spent most of my 20s and 30s pursuing a career in painting, working in restaurants to pay the rent and exhibiting my paintings regularly. When I turned 40, I realized time was running out on my opportunities for traveling / living abroad, so I began researching English teaching opportunities.

In 2008, I volunteered as a literacy tutor in Kansas City, to help hone my teaching skills while helping people learn how to read. In 2009 I found an internship program in Russia, and decided to apply for it. I traveled to Moscow, Russia for the first time in September 2009, and began learning how to teach English as a foreign language.

The internship began with an intensive 4 week training period. We had 8 hours / day of workshops, lesson-planning practice, and practice teaching. At the end of the 4 weeks, we took a grammar test. We were then assigned to a satellite Language Link school and began our careers as teachers! At my school, I taught Very Young Learners (ages 3-6), Young Learners (ages 7-12), Teens and adults of all proficiency levels (Beginner - Advanced)

After the completion of my internship I was recruited by another school in Moscow: Business Class. I had the opportunity to add teaching Business English to my range of teaching skills. I also traveled around Moscow to various companies and residences, rather than teach in a school. This is how I became very well-acquainted with Moscow and the beautiful and convenient metro system!

In 2011 I became friends with a young couple who had just had their first baby; they wanted the child to begin learning English from infancy. I started giving Polina lessons when she was 1, becoming a full-time nanny for her when she was 2 and her sister was born. I was welcomed as a member of the family--it was an amazing experience! Regretfully, for various reasons I had to return to the US. I miss teaching English--it was fun, interesting and challenging; and I believe I'm a good teacher because I'm very passionate about language learning, and I've learned my craft well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I had a recognized talent in drawing when I was 7 years old, and took regular drawing classes from that time until I graduated from University. My Bachelor's degree minor was in Drawing. I have continued to practice and experiment with pencil, charcoal and pen and ink for the past 20-some years.

Painting

I began learning how to paint in high school, with watercolors, acrylics and oils. I took classes outside of school as well, then majored in Oil Painting at University. I have continued to paint and exhibit my work regularly for the past 20-some years.
