I believe you can learn ANYthing! Even if it seems hard today, I promise you, we'll make it fun and meaningful, and you'll never be bored. I've been a freelance journalist for almost twenty years. I have more than 300 published clips on the Internet, and have worked with several small companies helping them with their social media, newsletters, press releases, web content, and more. While writing professionally, I've also tutored a plethora of both young and old in writing, language comprehension, reading skills, SAT prep, grant proposals, and college entrance essay writing. There is nothing you cannot read, or write about. I've even taught some people to improve reading skills using a comic book, or a cookbook! If it works, we'll do it.
I've also been a Judaics/Hebrew teacher for just as long. I was raised in a religious home, and although I am no longer religious, I went to Yeshiva and learned fluent Hebrew. I also lived in Israel. I started tutoring when I was in college, and have worked in both youth and adult education with students as young as six years old, all the way up to those in their eighties! Every student has a unique learning style. Some are auditory learners, some are visual, and still some are kinesthetic (they learn by motion!). In our lessons, I will gear all work toward you personally, and the style in which you learn best. There is never a rush, and no questions that cannot be answered. My greatest achievement was teaching a deaf girl her Bat Mitzvah lessons. Together, we can do this!
Take the first step. Drop me a note and let's talk about how we can make your time learning a fun experience rather than a drag. I believe you can learn ANYthing! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I attended Yeshivah for many years and learned fluent Hebrew. I also lived in Israel, and have taught Hebrew to both youth and adults here in Tampa.
I've taught and tutored youngsters and adults for almost twenty years in reading skills and comprehension. Each and every student is different and I completely tailor lessons to the student's best learning modality. For our newer readers, some will do well learning via phonics, a technique I use that emphasizes breaking words down into individual sounds. In some cases, I can help the student to learn and memorize the entire word as a whole--this makes better sense (especially for those tough "exception" words). For our more advanced readers, a refined comprehensive approach works well, where the student will learn how to break down sentences, look for repetition, and identify key subjects and patterns. Comprehension and speed will be vastly improved with these methods. Perhaps most important, though, is that we remember every student relates to subject matter in different ways. This means that for some I will use comic books, while others might do well with a fashion magazine, an old time children's primer, or even a technical scientific journal. The key is that everyone can learn to read, and to love reading! We can make that happen together.
Although the essay for the SAT will become optional in 2016 (as it is now for the ACT) students would do well to consider the merits of choosing the option to write that essay as it is one solid way to show off one's talent to prospective colleges. For the past five years I have coached students in writing skills designed specifically for the SAT and ACT, as well as for their college entrance essay. I cover each step, from analyzing the prompt, to organizing one's initial thoughts, outlining those thoughts, developing support statements, and then creating bridges that bring together the words in a seamless, perfect narrative (all while conforming to standardized English).
I just finished my Masters degree in Library Sciences from the University of South Florida. I am an avid, long time reader, and a book collector. I'm also a twenty year veteran print journalist, having written for dozens of venues around the world. I've also taught and tutored youngsters and adults for almost twenty years. Each and every student is different and I completely tailor lessons to the student's best learning modality. Believe it or not, sometimes, in order to teach vocabulary, I set the words and definitions to pop music. You would be amazed at how well some children learn new words, and word roots, by singing them!
